Jon Elorriaga Dr. Patrick Muana English 1301 Reading Response 3 25 May 2012 A Critical Reading of Michael Bugeja’s “Facing the Facebook” In “Facing the Facebook” Michael Bugeja discusses the various problems associated with the use of Facebook especially in educational institutions. Many educational institutions invest increasing amounts of money in technology with the idea of enhancing learning through research. That students actually waste their study hours on Facebook and get distracted in class because of Face book is an indication that those institutions are wasting their money. Although many professors have yet to find out about Facebook and about its impact on students, educational institutions as a whole are looking for ways to stop students from accessing it, especially during school hours. Another important downside to Facebook, Bugeja notes, is that it creates an egocentric environment – what he mentions as “egocasting” in his essay.
Summary: In the article “Online Friendship” wrote by Jan Farrington describes how the online touch the real life world, how teenagers use the Internet to keep in touch with their friends, and how to secure the information when the people spend time online. The most teenagers think social networking and IM are the easy way to help them stay connected and keep in touch with their friends, so they spend a lot of time linked in cyberspace or they use IM to keep in touch with their friends etc. For example: Lauren B said that attends in a high school she has so many friends, and she never saw each other during the day, so she and her friends used IM to everybody after school. Sometimes the parent worry about online world is talking over teen social life, and they bring the problem in their real life to continuous in the social life. For example Laurent B said that life online wasn’t always friendly, there were a lot of gossip.
Sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have become the place to go on the Internet. It does not take a scientist to know that generally a college student devotes more time to social networking sites than research. College students spend ridiculous amounts of time checking up on other people’s lives than focusing on more important things like studying and research. Missing friends from home is difficult, especially for a college freshman who is going through the culture shock of living away from home. However, college students need to understand that using social networking sites religiously is not just an issue about the amount of time devoted towards schoolwork, but that it can literally change how they think.
As our consumers view our pins and re-pin them our brand is exposed to new consumers as well as untapped markets. Facebook is a social app that allows us to easily reward our consumers for their loyalty and friendliness. If they choose to get the Facebook Places app they will be able to share with their friends about where they are and show that our brand is good and trustworthy. Without trust and interaction between the brand and consumers the brand cannot grow. The best way to gain that interaction is through social
I feel that few websites are created with the intent to entertain or inform their audiences anymore. Many people use them as a stream of revenue through the companies advertising on their sites. Facebook did not become a billion dollar company by offering people a free website to connect with their “friends”. It was the businesses investing their money to market their product or service, creating a brand for themselves. Every day, I hear about a scandal or crime involving media technology.
There were stories from last year and years back about cyberbullies and how this issue is raising eyebrows due to it being a deathly problem. From what the news or media has talked about it, it is widespread and with all the social media sites online today it is as easy as working from home to bully. When I grew up there was the bully at school, he or she bullied at school, maybe the bus, but after you went home that was it and that was the norm. As a kid you get used to it, the other kid moves on or the both of you grow out of that stage and all is well. Today, however that is not the case and anytime kids and or young teens are dying due to bullying an all out resolution has to be reached.
Cyber bullying is when someone writes humiliating comments about someone on the World Wide Web. Cyber bullying is when an adolescent is harassed, humiliated, embarrassed, threatened or tormented using digital technology, such as the computers, and cell phones. It’s important to understand why people use this type of bullying. Cyber bullying is used in an effort to make the person who is doing the bulling feel better about themselves, in a way that isn’t as confrontational. As many as 25% of teenagers have experienced cyberbullying, even though there is still more bullying at school in comparison to online.
Many college students are posting inappropriate pictures and posting comments about substance abuse that violate student-conduct policies or local laws. Students these days are now being charged with code violations because of their Facebook postings. Online communities and texting also is being used as a form of cheating in the classroom. The author states a few institutions are blocking Facebook altogether. He thinks the students should be taught interpersonal intelligence and learn when, where, and what kind of internet usage is appropriate.
High school itself is surrounded with the pressure of getting good grades for a future education and also the pressures of drugs, alcohol, boys, sports and adult influence. “The National Scholastic Journal took a poll of a group of one hundred students at random, “In today’s generation high school students believe the pressure they face has switched from peer pressure to pressure based of off social media” (Baur, 2013). Teenagers are hardly given a break & the media seems to add on to the pressures. A teenager’s biggest fear is to be considered an outcast. The media states in order for you to fit in you have to be thin.
Soon after, I started making friends in high school and learned to communicate with them via E-mail, Yahoo, Facebook etc. I remember how crazy i got when the Internet was out and I could not live without it for one night. I realized how much I relied on Internet. Mark Bauerlein, an English professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and the author of Too Dumb For Complex Texts article on Educational Leadership, believes that high school graduates are not ready for college-level reading, tests and papers. Technology causes multitasking and distractions which are problems in
