Reflection on Family Education

Family education is important as it is the essential and significant towards a child’s development and behavior. A great man Xiaoping Deng said, “The basis of a country’s modernization lies in talents, the basis of talents lies in education, and the basis of education lies in family.” Family education is a weak link in China, especially in the ethnic minorities. As the Western believes are penetrating through the East and facing the traditional and modern thought about family education, the Chinese parents are torn between the two choices, which are different in nature. China is a country with emphasis on family education. However, the education expert concerned, who made the long-term pursuit of investigations, thought that 2/3 family education is improper. Malignant events erupt unceasingly and some erroneous zones are still seen in the present Chinese family education. Some parents may provide wrong ideas and values to children, such as divorce and low cultural education. UNICEF’s flagship annual report, ‘The State of the World’s Children’, launched on 11 December 2006, focuses this year on the double dividend of gender equality, which helps both women and children overcome poverty. In Henan Province, Liu Duoduo, 17, dropped out of school because of poverty. “When Duoduo dropped out of school, both her father and I were worried,” says Ms. Chen. “But we couldn’t do anything about it. We have so many children to support and we were also very poor.” But with UNICEF and the China Association of Science and Technology’s help, she attends a learning centre and hopes to have a chance to become an artist. While catching up with her academic studies, Duoduo enrolled in a drawing class – part of the livelihood training offered by the learning centre.
