An Overview of Nancy K. Schlossberg’s Transition Theory Research Paper Although Dr. Nancy Schlossberg’s Transition Theory is typically categorized as a theory of adult development, the implications of the literature and research can easily be applied to many different life transitions, specifically when working with students in higher education. The following paper provides a brief overview of Schlossberg’s Transition Theory, the literature and research that currently exists on the topic and implications of the literature and how it relates to student affairs. Subsequently, this paper provides a critique of Schlossberg’s theory and provides thoughts on where additional research could be done using her transition theory. Balancing the need to expose wrong-doing with the need to protect “whistleblowers” requires wisdom. Protection is not a basic right. Right to feel protected as one does one's work. (Incorrect) No one can guarantee—or is responsible—for how we feel. We are responsible for noticing and monitoring our own emotions.

It’s unclear how Hume thinks of names, words or language as a whole. According to Hume’s theory, we must at least have impressions (and the corresponding ideas) of the spoken or written manifestations of words. Obviously, something unites these different impressions of manifestations of a word for us to know that they are the same word with the same meaning. But under Hume’s system, we are left with a circular explanation: the concept of the word is defined by the customary application of the word to itself. Under this conception, language is not an adequate tool to determine which particulars belong within a concept.

As a practitioner you must understand how to put into operation, view, and analysis these theories.
Tinto recently noted (1998) that while few issues in higher education have received as much attention, there is still much to learn. For the purpose of this exam question, the author will first briefly introduce Tinto’s model and then the paper will look at its key features, strengths and limitations to give the reader a clear background as to what the model is all about. The author will then conclude how relevant Tinto’s Model of Retention is. Vincent Tinto’s Model of Retention Vincent Tinto’s 1975 Student Integration Model (SIM) of attrition was intended to offer a longitudinal model which would explain all of the aspects and processes that influenced an individual’s decision to leave college or university. Tinto’s (1975) theory focused on how student’s lack of interaction within the higher education community leads to student departure.
