Don Johnson Psych1-19175 Reflection Activity #1 My idea of what psychology is follows the behavioral approach and social cognitive theory and falls in line with psychologists known as behaviorists. Although most behavioral approach studies originally took place in laboratories, I prefer the method in natural settings in order to take note of people’s response without any influence added. Individuals are more likely to respond to situations and environments naturally and truthfully without the pressure to meet a specific expectation. My personal experiences in my family, workplace and hobbies have played large roles in shaping who I am. For example, I remember building a shed with my father when I was young. I was using a hammer and he was using a hatchet (a hammer with an ax head on one end). It was very humid as we worked, so as my father swung his hammer back it slipped in his hands and the ax head hit his chin enough to spilt it open and daze him. He responded with a grunt and said he’d be right back as he left for the house. He came back with gauze taped to his chin and continued to work. Another example I recall is that when my father felt passionate about something he was sharing with me he didn’t mind shedding a tear in front of me. Witnessing these two examples has affected the way I respond to difficult situations and intimate moments with those around me. Because of his example my perception of a leader, and characteristics I try to imitate, are of a man who is strong enough not to whine and cry at the sight and idea of pain, but is not afraid of showing emotion when he is moved by an idea or situation. Albert Bandura said, “Identification allows the observer to feel a one-to-one connection with the individual being imitated and will be more likely to achieve those imitations if the observer feels that they have the ability to follow through
