In his essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” Stephen King tells us that some reasons we like a good horror flick are: to prove that we aren’t afraid of things that go bump in the night, to make us feel “normal,” and to have some good old-fashioned fun. Upon reading these assertions, I began to reflect on my own attitudes about the horror film genre. I have never considered myself to be a horror film fan. I tend to shy away from movies with extreme gore, violence, and gratuitous blood shed. They aren’t fun.
A thriller is a show filled with anticipation, tension, and excitement. Such shows would include Lost and 24. Both shows will leave audiences at the edge of thier seat and wanting more by the end of each episode. It is almost as if the characters are our best friends, and we are going through the adventure with them. A horror show will create an uneasy, eerie atmosphere and is intended to frighten watchers.
[pic] MASS SHOOTINGS Mass shooting for the most part is nothing new in our society, but in the United States, it has unfortunately become a disturbing trend that seems to be on the rise. The vicious killers are all violent, brutal monsters and have an abnormal urge to kill. For whatever reason, they may choose to use a weapon and kill people that they feel are responsible for their problem. They may kill total strangers in a bid to get even with whomever or whatever they feel wronged them. Whatever their reason, they are usually cooperative without remorse if they survive the episode.
I also have this fear, usually after watching a scary movie at night. This fear again relates to the notion that we are scared of what we don’t know. We don’t know what is lurking in the dark, so in turn we are scared of someone’s or something’s presence. If one were to be in the same setting with the presence of light, he/she wouldn’t be scared because the factor of uncertainty is once again eliminated. Ultimately, the whole story of fear comes to confidence.
Crash The movie crash does a very good job exposing how common stereotyping people really is. Many people are affected by this every day. I really hope this movie helped people realize how much they affect people by what they say or how they act towards people just based off of stereotypes. Stereotyping is defined in our book as exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system. Stereotypes may be based on a kernel of truth, but they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis.
The term exploitation is used heavily in film marketing as reference to what a movie will take advantage of in order to be more appealing to audiences. Themes are often sensationalist and exaggerated at the expense of the quality of the cinema, effectively labelled by academics as paracinema. Many aspects of the production can be exploited, such as using violence or sex to lure viewers. Movies such as these became extremely popular during the 60's and 70's in response to less censorship. However exploitation films in the 30's and 40's took on a more innocuous role in claiming to be educational in nature.
Horror Films and Society as Mirrors Since the beginning of time, violent crimes have been committed. From crimes of jealously, insanity, revenge, and even crimes of passion, criminals have always found a motive to validate their reason to hurt or kill. These crimes have dated back before the idea of movies, much less horror movies, was thought about. If this is the case, why would one believe that the violence in horror films is influential to society? Although horror movies can be psychotic, gory, and may sometimes give creative ideas to criminals; criminals committed heinous crimes before the television was even invented.
The media has a huge control on what is being watched on television. When it comes to Jackass the movie people love watching films that shows people hurting themselves and doing stupid stunts. People believe that watching others get hurt is more entertaining than watching intellectual shows because it puts many of them to sleep. Throughout the film there were many interviews from different people on describing what stupidity means to them. Not many of them really understand what it means.
Their ideas and thoughts are obviously tainted with inaccuracies, and often times the stalker will recognize this. But that does not stop the stalker, from pursuing the thing that gives them that real rush they strive for. Again, all of this can be derived from the unbalanced ratio of dopamine and serotonin in a stalkers body. Two main emotions that the majority of stalkers possess are anger and jealousy, both of which are magnified due to the uncommon
Gun control has always been a controversial topic. The deadly trigger has been known to kill many people through accidents and cold blooded murders. Some people fear that guns cause crimes and negatively impact society and as a result, feel that there should be some sort of ban or restriction placed on guns. However, others fear for their own security and believe that guns are needed for self defense and the restriction of guns will only go against their right to bear arm, as promised by the Second Amendment. Guns are fairly popular these days.
