Reality television has become a phenomenon that has captivated just about all of the world. There is a reality show that covers just about every subject. Anything from antiquing to zoology has a reality show. So what exactly is reality television? It is television in which a microphone is attached to people and they are followed around to cover a certain topic or just to see how they live for a certain amount of days. It captures the excitement and drama in the lives of celebrities, want to be’s, or even just regular everyday people. Everything from weddings and marriage to fights and divorce. The question has become, is this too much? Are we exposing and glorifying negative things like teen pregnancy as with the MTV show 16 & Pregnant. Are we sending a message out to the young women and men that it’s ok to fight to solve issues and talk down to women as with shows like Love & Hip Hop and Bad Girls Club? Or is it simply just entertaining to see people act so irrational even when they know a camera is rolling and the world will see it. Is Reality television harmless entertainment or a cultural threat? Reality television has been around since the early 90’s. It started off with shows like The Real World, Survivor, and Big brother. All of these shows involve putting strangers together in a house or area and allowing nature to take its course. As you can imagine, some people got along while others hated each other with a passion. Regardless which way the table turned, there was always a juicy entertaining and emotional finale. Since the 90’s reality television is more than seeing how people get along. The entertainment aspect is certainly there. Seeing people go through things they desire to happen, or wouldn’t wish on their worst enemy really holds an audience. But do these programs have a negative effect on society.
