Short story authors always create a realistic experience for the reader. Which one of the stories you have read so far is more realistic and why? Is it the characters that make it believable? All the stories in ‘Sunlight on the grass’ are realistic in one way or another. They all contain characters that would easily fit in everyday society in the places where the stories are set. However, some are more realistic than others, purely because of the events that occur in the story and the actions of the characters themselves. There are certain debates which can lead to which story is the most realistic. This essay will explore those debates to conclude which story in ‘Sunlight on the grass’ is the most realistic. One story which I think is the most realistic is ‘Anil’. There are many reasons why that involve the cultures which surround the story and the events that happen. In ‘Anil’, the main character is a young poor boy part of a strict family who finds himself involved in a string of distressful events. The story leads on to Anil witnessing a murder but then having to be sent away due to what he saw. One aspect of this story that makes very realistic is the fact some some people seem to be much more important than others. For example Anil father, Ragunathan an “illiterate, uneducated father” is a “mouse of a man” compared to the man who he serves. This means he is a servant to the “headman” of the village and had virtually no status whatsoever, as the word “mouse” describes. This is very realistic because cultural countries nowadays such as India, Pakistan, and Malaysia etc. often contain small villages and towns where one or two particular people are the leaders of everybody.
