Nursing theory applies conceptual frameworks to guide practice through predicting and describing specific behavior. There are many types of nursing theories out there, but the theory I chose was Dr. Katharine Kolcaba’s, The Comfort Theory. In an effort to address why the profession of nursing needs theory, it is important to identify the purpose and importance of theory in general. Not only does nursing theory need to demonstrate the progress of the profession itself, but nursing theory needs to be meaningful and applicable to our current practice. Many authors have somewhat different opinions of what nursing theory actually means, but the general consensus seems to support the fact that it is a set of clearly defined concepts and values.
I spoke with the nurse and anesthesia care provider, provided the facts and evidence, and maintained a professional attitude, and we were able to come to a professional understanding. I further discussed this with my nurse manager and nurse educator, and the policy is being changed to reflect our scope of practice. I was able to guide this new nurse in the correct direction, speak up for my profession, and lead an important change within my institution. Interviewee #1 who holds a MSN is director of Education, gave a brief description of her job and how her holding a MSN in nursing education, prepared her for her role by showing her the important need of evaluating and providing appropriate educational opportunities to the staff. She felt her education prepared her to evaluate these needs and to form and offer programs appropriate to meet the needs of the staff and patients. As nursing has progressed, theory has played a large role in defining the professional practice and identifying the standards to providing consistent, measurable practice among the profession. A basic definition of the term theory is given by Streubert & Carpenter (2011) as “a systematic explanation of an event in which constructs and concepts are identified and relationships are proposed and predictions made”. Nursing theories are the basic concepts that define nursing practice. It is why nurses do what we do. During any given shift, nurses are using several theories in ensuring that patients’ needs are being met and proper care is given to ensure the best possible outcomes.

One way to accomplish this is through a systematic review of the literature. Conducting a systematic review is beneficial to the reviewer as well as other nurses who do not have the time to conduct a review. Systematic reviews are conducted step-by-step to ensure unbiased and thorough synthesize of the literature. In this paper I will identify the key elements in the article Leadership Practices and Staff Nurses’ Intent to Stay: A Systematic Review (2011) and its potential on clinical practice.
Theoretical Basis: Watson's Theory of Human Caring An advanced practice nurse (APN) to help guide professional practice and provide a working framework can use many different theories and models. Theories provide a foundation in which an APN can seek to understand patients and their problems and effectively plan interventions. Basing our practice on a particular theory can help improve the care we provide by not only providing structure but also providing boundaries and goals for our nursing actions and it defines a framework to evaluate the effectiveness of the actions we provide (Eldridge, 2014). This paper is going to review Watson’s theory of human caring and provide a description of the interrelated concepts for the grand nursing theory. The theorist’s background and perspectives will be explained and lastly the theory will be discussed as to how it can serve as an underpinning and improve nursing practice.
Application of Theory Paper Nursing theory is the framework that defines nursing practice, establishes standards of care and provides the information essential for functioning patient care. Abstract Comfort is an important concept in nursing practice that must be used as a guide in providing holistic care to improve patient’s health status. In the history of nursing practice, the concept of comfort is vague and is often times linked to end of life situations only. Dr. Katharine Kolcaba, a teacher and a nurse researcher, developed the theory of comfort with the goal of improving the patient’s experience and overall satisfaction as well as to promote higher hospital integrity and better institutional outcomes. This paper informed the reader of the concept of Comfort Theory, its strengths and weaknesses including the barriers and challenges met when using the theory, its application and implication to critical care setting, and its relevance to healthcare professionals and to the health care system. Further on, the plan to implement the theory in critical care nursing was presented.
