National Air and Space Museum Reaction Paper On November 14, 2010 I visited the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. The purpose of this trip was to look at some of the exhibits to see how information about astronomy is presented and to learn more about concepts and discoveries related to this area of science. The first exhibit I visited was called "Beyond: Visions of our Solar System." This exhibit presented information about each of the planets in the solar system. The type of science presented was astronomy. The information was presented as a visual tour of the solar system. It included photographs of each planet taken by spacecrafts along with brief descriptions of each planet, including descriptions of the surface conditions, geological activity, the atmosphere, missions to explore the planet, and other facts. This is useful because it teaches people about each planet and also provides visuals to show what each planet looks like up close. The exhibit is mainly aimed at a middle school level age group because although the information is very easy to understand, there are no interactive components so most of the information is obtained by reading the descriptions of each planet. This doesn't capture the attention of young children and they often won''t be able to read the descriptions. Even if the photographs do capture their attention, they won't be able to learn much other than what they can see from the pictures. Specific details about each planet and the methods used to obtain this information were presented. For example, I learned that the first look at Mercury by a probe discovered the Caloris Basin that was formed as a result of an impact from an asteroid and that we know details about Venus's surface by using electromagnetic radiation to penetrate the cloud covering for photos. I also learned that Mars has been the target of the most
