Ramadan The month of Ramadan is very important to me, because it is the most important festival in Islam. During the month of Ramadan I fast. When I fast, I am not allowed to eat from sunrise till sunset. Ramadan helps me understand how people without food feel. It makes me think about how fortunate and blessed I am. It makes me feel companionate towards the needy. This year it was really hard for me because Ramadan came in summer. This means I can’t eat or drink for a longer time. To top it off I had varsity volleyball practice! By the end of practice I was usually dead. I love the 30th day of Ramadan. If someone sees the moon on the 30th day, it means Ramadan is the next day, but if the moon is not seen, we have to fast one more day. This year we saw the moon on the 30th day, so we had Ramadan the next day! Every Ramadan morning it is hectic in my house, because all four of us have to get ready and leave for the mosque. On Ramadan morning we had a grand breakfast, and we all dressed in new clothes. We got in our car and left for the mosque. The mosque is all the way in Motomachi, so I fell asleep. We got to the mosque right on time. This year the mosque was not crowed, so my mom and I got a good place to pray. In the mosque men and women don’t pray together. About five minutes later, the prayers started. It was cool to pray with so many people. I always find it amusing that we all stood up and bent down at the same time. It is like dominos. After prayers, we wisher each other “Eid Mubarak” and I got gift money from all my friends and family members. After that I had lunch at a restaurant and went shopping, and that was the end of my Ramadan. Some non-Muslims might not really get the concept of fasting and the meaning of Ramadan, but to me Ramadan is one of the happiest times in the year.
