Hannah Garrett Professor Lee English 110 17 September 2015 Teen Movies Summary In “High-School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies” David Denby expresses his thoughts on high school and how kids overcome the treacherous four years that shape their future. Over many years, high school has transformed into a twisted, judgmental “hell hole” and does not have much potential of returning back to the peaceful and conservative place it used to be. Prior to today’s disrespectful student population, teachers and parents of the students were looked very highly upon and were associated with scholar and wisdom. However, today‘s environment is completely flipped; teachers are not taken seriously and are treated as if they are a joke and parents
Tera January English 101 Professor Howell Assignment 2 – Final Draft 6 July 2013 Summary for Lubrano’s “The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts” In Alfred Lubrano's essay "The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts" he explains the differences and difficulties of what individuals can go through while attending college. When deciding to go to college you are making one major change that an individual from a working class family can make in their life. Lubrano makes a vital point that as children grow and move on from their parents traditions they lose their family support system due to the fact the once the student gets to campus they will run into multiple different types of environments and will also have no time to chit chat due to being over worked by class assignments. Throughout the essay Lubrano explains that by attending college, the child from a working class family defies the lower income stereotype; he/she is excluding the life of their parents and choosing a different life to live. He also examines other areas that would have an effect on the differences between middle class and working class students.
For example, the author uses sarcasm to point out the lack of support for students when he quotes, “Our public high schools place too much focus on preparing kids for professional careers.” The author later criticizes the unorganized approach teachers take towards the discipline and teaching of students when he quotes, ‘"Educators do a lot to ensure that the most hopeless students slip through the cracks... Arbitrary rules, irregularly enforced discipline, and pointless paperwork are just the first things that come to mind. "’ 2. What rhetorical strategies does the writer use to achieve this satire? List them, and explain how each is used.

In “Generation R”, Peck writes in a situation about the thought of new generation. Some instances show that young adults are not ready to face their independent lives. Jean Twenge, an associate professor of psychology, is found that young people who graduated from high school dislike the idea of work for work’s sake, and expect jobs and career to be tailored to their interests and lifestyle. They also have very high material expectations, and believe financial success is extremely important. High school itself is surrounded with the pressure of getting good grades for a future education and also the pressures of drugs, alcohol, boys, sports and adult influence. “The National Scholastic Journal took a poll of a group of one hundred students at random, “In today’s generation high school students believe the pressure they face has switched from peer pressure to pressure based of off social media” (Baur, 2013). Teenagers are hardly given a break & the media seems to add on to the pressures. A teenager’s biggest fear is to be considered an outcast. The media states in order for you to fit in you have to be thin.
Another reason why a student would have to dropout is because their family needs finical help. Whether it be a parent sick, or a loss of a parent, or they just cannot make ends meet, that’s a heavy responsibility on a student and they would not be able to do both. In my opinion, the most important reason a student drops out is because they fall behind in school, and there is no way for them to catch up. Whatever the reason is, it is important for students to know that there are options. Distance learning is a great way to get back on track with school and get students motivated to graduate and start college.
