Rabbat and Irwin Name: Institution: Abstract This paper explores two published articles written by Nasser Rabbat and Irwin using different approaches to study the history of Islamic Art. It examines the similarities of the two approaches in relation to each other. Both have used identical angles at some points of the articles making it easier to compare them. Nevertheless, it also studies the contrast in their approaches on aspects such as setting in terms of time and place. It goes on to establish the role played by pagan and Islamic religion and culture in the development of Islamic Art. It also explores the influence of pre-Islam emperors on Islamic Art through the architecture of their cities which gained world acclaim at that time for their brilliance and awesomeness in design. The artistic design of the streets, temples and theatres had a clear influence on Islamic Art in later centuries. Analysis of Rabbats approach Rabbat begins by analyzing the view of the professionals of Europe who discovered Islamic Architecture through exploration thus exposed it to the rest of Europe. They unknowingly unleashed a coup into mainstream European Architecture. Rabbat et al (2011) brings to light a conflict of ideas where scholars were at a loss of which term to use when referring to the new field. They finally settled on ‘Islamic Architecture’ after dismissing several ones that had arisen out of prejudice.
