Qualitative research uses the information found in order to provide an understanding to the human experience and behavior ("Encyclopedia.com", 2013). Quantitative and qualitative research differs from one another in terms of what data or information that they yield and display, as well as how that information is interpreted. For example quantitative research will portrait the percentage or statistics of a matter and qualitative research will look into and portrait the life pattern or the behavior of individuals to get them into those statistics. Both can relate to the human service field as well as the scientific method, which does get used within the human service profession. Both quantitative and qualitative can be incorporated into the scientific method.
Examine the extent to which practical issues are the most important influence when selecting research methods and a research topic. There are many important issues which influence the decision of selecting which research methods to use and a research topic. There are many difference research methods to consider such as experiments, surveys, questionnaires, interviews, observation, case studies and official statistics. The researcher has to take into account many issues which will decide upon which is suitable for the research topic the researcher is interested in. Almost all sociological experiments have practical issues that must be looked at and sorted out.
There are a number of ways to carry out research; however there are two main approaches which are qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research mainly focuses on words and meanings, whereas quantitative research involves recording information what is found in a numerical form to enable the researchers to provide the public with statistics. Research in Health and Social Care can give us information about thoughts and opinions, attitudes, scientific facts, medical information and cultures. With any research gathered, health and social care professionals can then use it to make decisions, use it to change behaviour, improve standards of care etc. Identifying a need Workers in the health and social care industry have to plan every step they take, and every decision they make, and they use research principles to pinpoint the needs of an individual.
Moreira (2012) stated, “Humanistic-phenomenological psychotherapy is a contemporary development of person-centered therapy” (p. 3). Carl Rogers was an influential psychologist as well. The article on Carl Rogers describes his findings and the importance of his research and how these findings are researched even further. Many changes have been made to the Rogerian theory, which originated from a clinical theory of psychotherapy, Rogers work expanded into other areas such as education (Moreira, 2012). Psychologists and researchers around the world have continued the study of Rogers’s person-centered
The development of the field has been spurred on through the use of research and statistics. Throughout its evolution clinical psychology has met with resistance and challenges that have helped to define the practice. The challenges of the past lead to the resolutions of the present and the further expansion of a field dedicated to the improvement, prevention and strength of the human spirit. Clinical psychology shares a number of important components with other related fields allowing for a more adaptable approach to client care and diagnosis. As time passes the practice and research associated with clinical psychology will continue the natural evolution and understanding of the science allowing for a more defined approach to client care.
Research is extremely important in the health and social care sector. It is necessary for the following reasons: * Research identifying needs * Research highlights gaps in provisions * Research plans provision of services * Research informs policies and practise * Research extends knowledge and
RESEARCH METHOD: CASE STUDY INTRODUCTION The case study method is amongst the most flexible of research designs, and is particularly useful in researching issues related to sustainability and institutional systems. It incorporates a number of data-gathering strategies: •document analysis, •surveys, •participant or non-participant observation, and •participatory or action research Case study research can serve a variety of functions, such as: exploratory (enabling researchers to get a feeling for potentially important variables and to describe phenomena in the appropriate contextual setting), for testing hypotheses or theories (relating to cause and effect in a quasi-experimental fashion), and for policy analysis (teasing out prescriptions for action). Past literature reveals the application of the case study method in many areas and disciplines. Among them include natural examples in the fields of Sociology (Grassel & Schirmer, 2006), Law (Lovell, 2006) and Medicine (Taylor & Berridge, 2006). In addition, there are also other areas that have used case study methods extensively, particularly in government, management and in education.
It is essential to specify populations, interventions, and outcomes, and sometimes comparators, timing, and settings. It can also identify potential modifiers and mediators of effectiveness as it describes the aspects of the project by analyzing all the available data and provides assumptions of effective intervention. Therefore, all systematic reviews conducted in the evidence-based practice center program should have analytical frameworks (McPheeters, 2009). According to Lieberman (2007), applying analytical framework into the problem solving will help by providing a checklist of skills, tools, and techniques for the research, including the specific skills to meet the desired situation/needs and to analyze the complex problem systematically. However, there are some drawbacks of using frameworks, such as it is powerful but complex, hard to learn, expensive to develop and it requires a detail documentation and
