Discuss the purpose of newspapers in today’s society There are a variety of different views as to what the purpose of newspapers is in the modern day. It is certainly true to say that the purpose has changed in the past century. Originally, the main purpose was to of course, inform the general public of the news. But this idea of informing has changed, in my opinion. The way newspapers were written has changed drastically in recent years. They were very much factual and straight to the point at the start of their ‘creation’ but have transformed recently. A main controversial point that arises with newspapers in today’s society is whether the contents are story or gossip. Today’s newspapers are crammed full with celebrity chatter that would not be considered ‘news’ years ago. The general public today seem equally concerned with celebrity affairs than they are with disasters with many lives lost. I think it is very immoral. Another issue that is brought up with the purpose of newspapers in today’s society is that many people buy them because they agree with the paper’s own agenda. For example, one of the main reasons they are bought is because they agree with the newspaper’s political leaning. Should the government have that much power over the newspapers? This chain can lead to the public also. The press has so much power over the general public too – they believe everything that they read so in a way, using a political angle, is somewhat brainwashing, which I believe also to be immoral. Newspapers today, are filled with glossy pictures. Some would say that they are there to entertain? Is that what newspapers’ purpose is? To entertain? Again, through generations, this view of what newspapers are meant to be is always changing. Newspapers are made to appeal to a target audience.
