Garcia Jr. MGT/521 University of Phoenix Morris Polston October 10, 2011 Purpose of Business To most individuals and business leaders the purpose of opening a business would be in order to make money or a profit of some sort in order to pay for your investment. A business is a big undertaking for just about anybody and it is a big responsibility that needs to be maintained if you want to have any sort of success. Depending on the businesses you choose to run, depends on the expectations that the business must attain in order for you to be successful and make a profit at the end of the day. Purpose Not to Make a Profit William Cohen, a guest blog contributor on www.humanresourcesiq.com, is someone who disagrees with the age-old tale that the purpose of business is to make a profit. His blog was responding to a lecture he heard by Peter Drucker, who was a professor of his. “I heard Peter say a lot of strange things when I was his student, but this has got to be one of the most unusual that I’d heard up to that time. I think most of my Drucker classmates agreed. Indeed, until Drucker came along most everyone believed the basic “fact” that the purpose of a business was to make money, (Cohen, 2011).” Cohen continued, “That is, to make a profit. This belief leads to a corollary, another myth, believed by all—that is, that the goal of any business is profit maximization. Another words, whatever your business, your goal should be to make as much profit as possible. If you accept making a profit as a business’s purpose, the second part just follows naturally. This might even seem worthy to many, (Cohen, 2011).” Another opinion that is out there is that of Dr. Jerry Osteryoung, who has the same belief as Cohen. Osteryoung got a doctorate in Finance and has taught classes and for many years
