Children don’t listen to their school teachers as much as they listen to society. They learn more from watching television and celebrities. If society was serious about education, then the school year would be longer so that children could learn all-year-round and class sizes would be smaller so that teachers could engage with each student more. There is also a salary issue with education. American teachers don’t earn as much money as business professionals and teachers in other countries such as Japan, Canada, and Germany.
Solutions for problems like these are hard to come across, but if people took it upon themselves to try to educate them self by reading and writing more than they do it would help them in the long run. There was a table “From Reading at Risk” by Shea, Scanlon L., and Aufses presented that showed how many people actually take the intuitive to read for the purpose of educating their self. The people within the school systems should take a look at all of the problems with the Education system. It all starts with the adults in charge. Not every parent has the financial Stability to send their kids to schools with great education programs, as shown in waiting for Superman.
Instead, inductions often focus on the priorities of an individual school so that teachers gain experience in the areas of specific concern to their workplace, but not wide enough coverage of learning difficulties to win qualified teacher status, the report warned. Gatto uses this example of knowledge to prove his point that not every successful child went to school. A second time Gatto uses exemplification is when he is explaining his own experience in the school system as a teacher. He remembers that “my own experience had revealed to me what many other teachers must learn along the way, too, yet keep to themselves for fear of reprisal: if we wanted to we could easily and inexpensively jettison the old, stupid structures and help kids take an education rather than merely receive a schooling”. He uses this personal lesson from life to convey that children are only obeying what they are being told, only learning what they need to in order to escape the prison called school. In an example from his childhood, Gatto remembers talking with his grandfather and he “complained to him of boredom, and he batted me hard on the head.
I don’t understand why the information in some classes is more educational than others, when we should all be learning the same stuff. Many people argue that money shouldn’t matter, but money does determine what kind of teachers and supplies there are within a school. A prime example that can be a problem is there may be a class where the teacher knows how to teach the information that the students need to know, but there are no books for the students. Many school districts are participating in this case in order to help change how the distribution of wealth happens within the state. Every district should receive a certain amount of money and supplies in order for every school to give every student in the state of Texas an equal opportunity towards a successful future.
Did you know that “There is no conclusive data to show that school uniforms solve any of the problems they were created to solve”? (“Point: The High Cost of School Uniforms”). Wearing uniforms is not required in all PA public schools, but in some schools it is. Many people (mainly parents) believe it to be that no PA public school should be required to wear uniforms. Others should agree as well.
As well did I when I first read Gatto's piece against school. But after reanalyzing this article I was able to pick it apart. By going to school you are able to learn and improve the skills you need for future commissions. But Gatto refuses to believe in the public school educational system. Gatto says that school diminishes creativity; if anything kids discover their hidden creativeness in class while at school.
Retention, though, has proved to not help students academically. Another astonishing factor is that the more students retained, the more likely they are going to drop out in school. Also, most adults that have been held back are more likely to end up unemployed, living off of government assistance, or in jail than the students who were not held back. All promotion tests do is widen the gap between students without learning disabilities and those that are disabled (Finn, Petrilli 80-85). Furthermore, standardized testing is not a good indicator for college students’ ability to make good grades.
There are many different forms of schooling in America we have private schooling, home schooling, rural schools, urban schools, or no schooling at all. Since these schools do not all teach the exact same form information it is hard to know if children are receiving the same education. In the work force this will create statistical discrimination for the employee because employers will look at where the applicant graduated high school. It seems that the school district a child attends reflects on their pay later in life. Factors that can change the quality of schooling are the location of the school, violence in the area, and the abilities the child has.
As of 2011, these standards were becoming quantitatively tested through standardized testing -- the same test is given to every student, and the results are used to judge that school's performance. This means that public schools often "teach to the test," which means they focus on the students getting high scores on the test, even if this is not conducive to their actual learning. Classroom Size Government funding is not always enough for the best learning environment. Class sizes are a concern for many school districts. Large classes are less conducive to learning than small classrooms where the teacher can focus more on each child, but the facilities and staffing necessary for this are not always in the budget of a publicly funded
