ENG 1003 8 AM 12-3-11 Public and Private High School Athletic League in Kentucky In the Kentucky High School Football League today, private schools continue to dominate small and large public school programs. This is a rising concern between parents, players, and coaches. Private schools have been dominant for years, ever since they were started. Some states have separate leagues for private and public high schools. Louisville’s district is made up of over 15 different private schools in the Jefferson District. Private schools have a huge advantage over public schools. However, this problem can be easily solved through the creation of separate leagues. Public and private schools need to be in separate leagues during athletics because private schools have an enormous advantage over the public schools in their districts, regions, and playoffs due to private schools recruiting players, more money for equipment and facilities, and easy schedules. In Kentucky, schools are separated into class 1A – 6A. Each class is made up of districts made up of teams that compete to win their district and move on to regions. Every year, when regular season ends, Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) randomly matches two districts for regional tournament (Kentucky High School Athletic Association). These two districts are often very different, mostly consisting of a district dominantly made up of public schools and the other districts dominantly private. Rules and regulations are very different for private and public schools. Public schools are controlled by the state and must follow the states rules and regulations, given by the KHSAA. Private schools are not part of state rules and regulations. They are run by themselves and not given any state aid. This means they create their own rules and regulations. This helps them to recruit players for athletics
