PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN HO CHI MINH CITY Public transportation has been a very important part of the country. In 1995, 564.4 million people used public transportation. This number has increased tremendously and reached 2.2 billion people in 2010. It is no doubt that public transportation is becoming more and more important. However, the qualities and conditions of public transportation in Vietnam are questionable. In this essay, I will mention the qualities and conditions of 2 different types of popular public transportation in HCMC: bus and taxi. First, bus system covers almost every road in the city; however, the qualities and the conditions of buses are not good. There are some new bus models but the majority of buses is old and in very bad condition. Moreover, time is also a bus' issue. They are usually ten to fifteen minutes late. In rush hours, some buses can be thirty minutes late. That is not convenience for students and workers who want to go to school and work on time. In addition, most drivers are not friendly and helpful. Sometimes, they are rude with passengers. One sad thing about buses is that people don't share their seats to older people or pregnant women and no one cares about it. In addition to the problem, drivers are often careless. There have been many accidents involving buses in the city. It is understandable that they want to be on time; however, people's lives are more precious so they have to be more responsibility with their driving. If this problem is not solved as soon as possible, there will be more accidents. Air conditioning in buses is horrible. In summer days, this could be a huge problem due to the tropical climate of Vietnam. On the other hand, you don't have to pay much while using buses. The price is cheap.
