Bibliography p. 11 1. Introduction The novel On Chesil Beach, by Ian McEwan, is set in England – it is 1962 and Florence and Edward, who are both 22 years old, have just been married in Oxford. The novel starts after the official wedding ceremony, when they are in a hotel on Chesil Beach where they are planning to spend their wedding night. McEwan’s opening sentence however already foreshadows the tragic-comical events to follow : “They were young, educated, and both virgins on this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible” In this essay I will try to elucidate the reasons why the main characters’ relationship fails even though they continue to confess their love to each other.
