Pros and Cons of Media Censorship Media is a mirror of the world because it reflects the various happenings in different parts of the world. The media covers a very broad spectrum of news to cater to individual needs and tastes. Thus, the government assumes that the public has access to a wide range of news and views. Therefore, media censorship is created gradually by democratic and non-democratic systems as an invisible boundary of freedom in speech and expression. However, media censorship may be the only true way to protect our thoughts and mannerism. There are dispute as to whether censorship is good or bad. Nowadays, even entertainment materials are the victims of media censorship. In the internet, pornographic photos and video clips are widespread. So, the ministry of information had to trim them according to the rate of exposure and movies that are shown in cinemas are rated according to their contents too. Violence in films is nothing but just a tale of murder after murder. People get killed all over the place by guns, knives, bombs and other types of killing material are displayed unceasingly and it is like a feast where killing is the main activity. As you can see, pornographic and violent scenes are censored for the sake of youths’ mental development. This serves as a positive impact to our immature viewers. There are three major races here, the Malays, Chinese and Indians with smattering of other ethnic groups. So far, we have managed very well to stay as one nation despite our differences. However, these differences may easily ignite racial issues and discriminations among the citizens. Thus, censorship is imposed to prevent racial strife. For example, the May 13th incident in year 1969 was a spoil of the perfect co-existence between the races.
