The ground water may become contaminated with both organic and inorganic substances which may include heavy metals like Cadmium, Chromium and Nickel, etc. (Christensen et al, 2001). Pharmaceutical wastes can cause cancer within human cells. (Krifa et al. 2013).Pharmaceutical companies sometimes place active chemicals and waste into groundwater sources, in which almost all of the groundwater may be untreated which most likely cause contamination.
Some of the major negative economic effects of natural gas drilling are the enormous amounts of pollutants released into our water sources. With estimates coming close to 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas sitting in the Marcellus, it’s no wonder companies are willing to drill at any cost to the local water systems and communities. In other words, there is conservatively two trillion dollars in nature gas reserves sitting right under us. The problem with fracking is being able to find an economical and environmentally friendly way to dispose of the waste water. There are approximately thirteen treatment plants used to deal with the waste water that is accumulated by the massive fracking operations all over the state.
Another leading cause of pollution in Lake Huron is air pollution. Past environmental studies have shown over three million kilograms of carcinogens polluting the air (Statistics 2003). Currently studies show the working group in Lake Huron have clean up day to help promote clean air (Statistics 2009). Other contributing causes to the pollution in Lake Huron are fertilizers which have caused major algae blooms, causing an imbalance in nutrients, a collapse in the salmon fishery, and chemicals from pesticides. Fish stocks have significantly declined due to the increased pollutants (Harvey
Would you want them
working for you? Plus, the financial impact on business is severely staggering
because of drug using employees (Psychemedics, 1).
According to federal experts, ten to twenty-three percent of Americans
have used or currently using dangerous drugs while on the job, and forty-four
percent of drug users even admit to selling drugs on the job. Drug abusers cost an
employer on average $7,000 to $10,000 per employee annually (Jussim, 14)
(Psychemedics,1). The big problem is 1/3 of employees know of the sale of illegal drugs in their workplace. With the implementation of drug free workplace programs in small and medium sized businesses have implemented these programs. With the 75% of Americans that work for these types of businesses, workers that want to avoid substance abuse at larger companies take their job’s to smaller companies and that’s where their job is currently today! Currently we need more implementation of drug free workplaces along with Drug Free Work Week. A Drug Free Work Week is an effort from the department of U.S. secretary that promotes important information on being drug-free for the sake of keeping of safe workplaces.
Meth is considered one of the greatest drug threats to our nation with its affects costing anywhere between $16.2 and $48.3 billion dollars a year according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Methamphetamine use has become such a serious problem that not only causes devastating effects on ones individual health but also threatens communities as a whole by causing new waves of crime, child neglect or abuse, and other social ills. Many factors have been put in to place to try to eliminate the abuse of methamphetamine such as strict laws around two of the key ingredients meth is made from, and several prevention/educational programs to try and provide awareness of the devastating effects of the abuse of meth. Some treatments for lupus are NSAIDs, antimalarial drugs, corticosteroids, and immune suppressants. Corticosteroids can counter the inflammation of lupus but, can cause long term side affects like weight gain, easy bruising, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and increase risks of infections. One interesting fact I found was that glaucoma can occur when having lupus. Another fact I found was that kidney failure is one of the leading causes of death among people with
The methane concentration is seventeen percent higher in the drinking water near sites where fracking is performed. The water is used by near by cities and towns. This water has been seen to cause sensory, respiratory, and neurological damage to those who are exposed to it. The chemicals used in the mixture are chemicals known to cause cancer. Fracking is also hard on the environment.
Most of the chemicals used in the making of meth are highly dangerous and extremely flammable. A majority of them also come with warning labels saying harmful if swallowed may burn eyes or skin on contact, seek medical attention and drink a glass of milk or water but do not induce vomiting but yet so many people aren’t reading the warning labels anymore. In 2008, 850,000 Americans age 12 and older had abused methamphetamine at least once in the year prior to being surveyed showing that 1.2% of 8th graders, 1.5% of 10th graders, and 1.2% of 12th graders had abused methamphetamine.
