Unit CU 2942 Promote Professional Development Emma Drake Understand principles of professional development 1.1 Explain the importance of continually improving knowledge and practice Developing your professional ability is vital amongst the childcare spectrum as things are changing all the time. As a professional, I have a professional responsibility to engage in continuous professional development. This means taking action to keep my skills and knowledge up to date and seeking to improve my capabilities across the range of tasks I carry out daily. Continually improving my knowledge is essential to my role and ensures that I have skills and knowledge needed to create the best provision for children. I need to be aware of the most up to date legislations and guidelines, including the EYFS and welfare requirements.
I will get to know each child, establish relationships with parents, and support their strengths as well as their needs. I will express my own emotions and respond to the children’s emotions, valuing their feelings and helping them express what they are feeling. But above all, I will make sure that every child feels secure in my room and are comfortable coming to me as their teacher. I provide a positive relationship with the child through daily routines and interactions. I feel this gives the children and parents a sense of trust.
They enable us to gain professional development and provide a way to identify good practices. 1.4. Describe how own values, belief systems and experiences may affect working practice? Values, belief systems and experiences may affect my working practise because if I treat people differently or force my views and opinions on to people it can cause conflict. By listening and understanding other people’s values and beliefs I can understand them and their beliefs better and improve communication with them.
Effective communication is also important so that information given is clear, concise, accurate, and informative. This decreases the possibility of errors being made. It is important to work as a team with other members of the setting, so that the child is getting the support the need and so that ever one is working to achieve the same results and goals. Within my own we use a range of methods to communicate with parents such as, monthly newsletters, class teachers hand-outs/diary informing parents what their child is doing each term, letters and posters. Having effective communication with the parents is important so that they know how their child is doing and what is happening at the nursery.

1.3 Compare the use of different sources and systems of support for professional development There are several sources and systems of support for development available to people working within a care setting these include: • Inductions- Inductions will provide you with the skills and basic knowledge that you need to do in your job role. It will also help you to get used to the working role. Without having an induction to the job you wouldn’t know what to do when it comes to starting your job and what the job role would entitle. • Appraisals- Appraisals will help you for see the things that you may need to work on within in your job role and what you may need to improve. They can help you set up a target to achieve something for your next
Continually improving knowledge and practice benefits both resident and the carer. It also help us to ensure that we are doing our best and we are meeting all necessary standard and expectations. We need to consider as well the new legislations and be updated to different changes and be able to apply in our work.
