Professional Values and Ethics In society, values help define people’s core thinking; such as, a college education may be valued to one person whereas a full-time job may hold more value for someone else. Personal values could be defined as what a person personally views as being useful, important or of worth. Professional values differ from company to company just as personal values do between individuals. However, the underlying foundation remains the same. A company’s values are determined by what they deem useful, important, and of worth to their institution. Ethics are defined as the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular group or culture such as, medical ethics, religious ethics, and professional ethics (dictionary.com 2011). Ethics and values are cornerstones to successful businesses and enterprises. In an enterprise, values help to convey a sense of identity to its members, enhance the stability of its social system, direct managers attention to important issues, guide subsequent decisions by managers and facilitate to something larger than the self (Duh, Belak, & Milfelner, 2010). Ethics, on the other hand, help govern the implementation of values (Free Merriam-Webster dictionary, 2011). Values and ethics play an imperative role in a business’s ability to create a strong company identity and a lucid plan toward customer service. Professional values and ethics, or the lack there of, have the ability to increase or decrease opportunities for companies and/or individuals alike within the professional atmosphere. Any company, big or small, can be marred or merited by the perception of its customers.
