Problems of Pornography Abstract There have been many studies done on pornography and its effects. Most studies have found that viewing pornography is harmful to the viewer as well as society. Researchers have found that using pornographic materials leads to several behavioral, psychological and social problems. It also leads to problems in the workplace. One study states that one-third of workers admitted to viewing or passing along porn at some time and half of all workers said they'd been exposed to sexually explicit material by co-workers. The use of porn at work results in lost time, talent, creativity, productivity, and profitability. My first experience with porn and a co-worker began a few years ago. I will call him “Fred”. He loved to view porn as well and pass it along through emails. “Fred” was unable to control his desire for porn at work. He spent much of his time on the computer looking at pornography until our company put a block on our computers. He is like an alcoholic who needs a drink, like an alcoholic he acquired a tolerance to pornography and needed to see more graphic porn more often to get the initial high. “Fred's” need for porn continued to spiral out of control but he continued to do the same thing in spite of the negative consequences of his behavior. He almost lost his job at one point. Everyday millions of people experience the same pain as “Fred”. Studies have shown that viewing pornography can be as mood altering and have the same effect on the brain as narcotic drugs. A chemical in the brain, epinephrine "burns" images of porn permanently into the memory at cellular level, images can easily be remembered and triggered by a word, a display in the mall, the sight of a woman at the grocery store or a newsstand.
