Abortion is a very controversial subject that many avoid because it has so many
opinions when it is the topic of conversation. According to the Encyclopedia Americana,
abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by loss or destruction of a fertilized egg, embryo, or
fetus before birth. Even though many people believe that the destruction of a human being is
considered murder, all women should have the right to choose to plan their own fertility.

terminate a pregnancy such as a result of being raped or molested and for the health of the
In 1969, a woman named Norma L. McCorvey became pregnant. Roe was the nickname
given to her to keep her identity secret. Living in the state of Texas was a disadvantage for her
because at the time abortion was a crime. She got together with friends and agreed to claim
she was raped. After she gave birth, her case was sent to the U.S. Supreme Court. She argued
that the Texas statutes were unconstitutional. Women have had rights for decades; they have
had the right to vote, work and have religious freedom. It was not until the case of Roc vs.
Wade in 1973 that the Supreme Court’s decided to make abortion legal in all states. There are
many reasons that a women might want to get an abortion. Some reasons are that they might
not be able to support a child, for the health of the mother or the child, becoming pregnant as a
result of being raped or molested. I believe that all women have the right to choose and plan
there fertility. Deciding to terminate a pregnancy is something that any women should really
take the time to make sure that abortion is what they really want and the final decisions should
always be on the women and no one else.
