Why is the use of exclusive coercive power an ineffective and impractical method of operating a prison? What tactics would you employ instead? Why? The use of coercive power in prisons is ineffective because some prisoners see no reasons why they should have to comply with what prison staff may want them to do. Most prisoners do not expect to really have to do anything out of the ordinary schedule and see no reason why they should help the prison staff. Being forced to do tasks by intimidating a prisoner either by pain or restriction is not the best way to operate a prison. Instead of a coercive type of power I would try rewarding prisoners that complied with me on a daily basis. Such rewards may be spending an extra hour out of their cell or allowing them to have extra educational or recreational time. Getting the prisoners to work with me and not making my job more complicated would be a major goal of mine if I was to be in this type of position. Instead of forcing prisoners to do something by threatening them I would rather have the prisoners be rewarded for complying with what I say to give them more encouragement to listen and be compliant. Name and describe the various types of employees that can be found in a correctional institution. Give an example of each. Discuss each employee's goals and discuss the ways these various goals compliment or contradict one another. First there is the deputy warden who basically oversees all the functions, programs, the prisoners and the staff to maintain the custody and security of their prisoners. The warden is ultimately in charge of how the prison runs and how the prisoners are handled. There is also the line personnel who have direct contact with prisoners on a daily basis. The line staff includes medical workers in the prison along with industry supervisors and the custody force. Staff personnel handle
