There are many control measures in place in a custodial environment to ensure the safety of everyone, control measures are needed as they will receive effective responses and it makes sure there is equal treatment for all prisoners. Control is needed in a custodial care environment as people are sent there for a reason because they have wronged society, having them do whatever they want is not a punishment. An advantage of having control in the prison is that the staff will always have authority over the prisoners, which is vital as they must be able to enforce discipline. Another advantage of having control is that they can keep an account of offences that prisoners have committed, this comes in useful when reviewing the prisoner, for example
The issue of prison conditions and the impacts they have on the future lives of inmates has attracted significant interest in the American society. One of the most important trends in the U.S justice system is that out of 600, 000 inmates that are released from prison each year, about two-thirds end up being rearrested after three years (Chen & Shapiro, 2007). In this respect, the objective of this paper is to discuss prison life and strategies that can be adopted in prisons to reduce recidivism. Analysis of the Purposes for Prisons in the U.S Justice System The correctional facilities in the U.S are principally meant to ensure that the sentences that have been prescribed by the Courts on offenders are implemented to the letter. Nevertheless, correctional administrators in the modern correctional facilities have been enlightened in that they recognize a broader responsibility and mission of prisons.
The correctional administrators and health directors need to be informed/able to meet the complicated needs of inmates with mental health disorders. Amongst the staff should have the knowledge for screening and assessment, case management, psychopharmacology, and suicide prevention services, and discuss as well as find methods for effectively organizing and managing in-prison mental health services. There should be physical facilities, staff, staff training, or clinical resources to meet the needs of
* Instruct inmates and maintain control in all areas. Look for signs of disorder and report observations to a higher authority; counsel with inmates regarding adjustment problems. * Keep a record of equipment, supplies and other items; demonstrate the use and care of firearms, restraint methods and equipment and emergency measures;; instruct inmates in the proper care and use of equipment. * Maintain inmate location counts; setup and receive inmate counts and be familiar with the operation of the Control Room; initiate and participate in search of inmate recreation areas, work areas, and units to prevent the introduction of contraband items. * Maintain proper security of inmates being transported; make sure that all transportation permits are completed accurately and signed by the appropriate authority; institute proper restraints as appropriate for inmate's custody classification; check transportation vehicles daily * The reason you chose that
Most researchers conduct studies about inmate life experiences inside prison, primarily because institutional prisoners make captive audiences. An exception to this is research conducted with prisoners recently released from prison. Craig Hemmens supervised a research team that interviewed 775 former inmates as they were waiting for the bus within a few minutes to a few hours of release for prison. Hemmens (1998) found that as prisoners found that as prisoner’s age, their apprehension about reentry decreased. Less reentry apprehension also applied to prisoners who served sentences of three years or less compared with those who served sentences longer than three years.
Roles of Corrections Officers Angela Primiano CRJ 303 Corrections Instructor: Jonathan Sperling June 6, 2013 A correctional officer is responsible for the safety and security of prisoners as well as the supervision in the prison or jail. Correctional Officers are responsible for the safety and security of the facility the same as the prisoners. Accomplishing this is not an easy task as they must maintain order by enforcing rules and regulations. It is important for the correctional officer to provide custodial care necessary for the well-being and security of inmates incarcerated in the prison or jail. A correctional officer has many duties as they have to processing new inmates, supervising inmate visitation, prepare inmates to be transported to court appearances, distributing food to inmates, handling control room operations, and reviewing and verifying inmates trust fund accounts, assisting victim’s advocates, conducting security checks and overseeing the inmates sentence calculation and releases by reviewing court commitments.
Other objectives of rehabilitation include keeping control of the offenders life through supervision and treatment monitoring, improve treatment environment, provide social support and improve community involvement via employment support and community service (University of Phoenix, 2013). Parole is post-incarceration release; it is release from prison before the completion of the sentence imposed. Parole differs from mandatory release; mandatory release is when an inmate is released into society, only after the full completion of the sentence is served through incarceration. Paroled prisoners are released, under conditions, before the completion of their sentence is served. Violating the conditions of one’s parole can result in revocation of parole and return to prison to complete the remainder of the original sentence.
Community Corrections Barb Vorachek University of Phoenix (Axia) CJS/230 Theresa Degard 12/11/11 Community Corrections The goals of community corrections are to contribute to public safety, and reduce future criminal conduct (Martin, 2006). Community corrections are a big part of the criminal justice system. Community corrections are a form of punishment that an offender can receive to serve time in the community, instead of serving it in jail. There are many forms of community corrections it does not only involve probation and parole. Other forms include community service and house arrest (Foster, 2006).
However, the implementation of; Prison improvement program has made it possible for prison to preserve the basic human rights of inmates. A prison is a place that holds people who have been convicted, or found guilty, of serious crimes, although there are a number of reasons why we use imprisonment. Customary we use prison to deter those who commit crime, and also to serve as a punishment for those who commit crime. Nonetheless we also use prison to reform people in order to get them ready for reintroduction of society. The most important thing that we use prison for is to keep people in our society safe, and to offer protection.
Community corrections programs are operated under the directions and supervision of parole and probation agencies. These types of community corrections programs include general community supervision, halfway houses, day reporting agencies, work release programs, and residential care facilities. The main goals of the community corrections programs is to providing accountability for ex-convicts, rehabilitation services and programs, and community enforcement to ensure all paroled ex-convicts are adhering to the guidelines outlined in the parole hearing. According to DeMichele, (2008) “Community corrections agencies can promote their public safety and justice mission through a balance of rehabilitative and punitive techniques. Strategies that use both rehabilitative and punitive tools must integrate treatment, surveillance and enforcement.
