Prison overcrowding is a significant problem that United States, where many people may think the cause of overcrowding is the result of people committing more crimes, in fact the real cause of the overcrowding is the changes to both federal and state sentencing policy’s. These changes have increased the proportion of the individuals who are charged with felonies and sentence to length jail and prison sentences. Once a person becomes an inmate, our current system makes it really hard to fit back in the community. The rate of offenders coming back to both jail and prison has increase because of the difficulty inmates have getting fair employment and forgiveness. Where policies are being created daily to reduce the number of people who are beng sent to both jail and prison, along with the minimum and maximum length of time in which each person should incarcerated and the fair amount of time the inmates should spend on probation and parole. The terms of a inmate probation or parole increases the risk for technical violation penalized by more imprisonment. Recommendations for changing
One answer to decreasing the number of reduce time served in prison; eliminate imprisonment for parole or probation technical violators; reduce the length of parole and probation supervision periods; and decriminalize "victimless" crimes, particularly those related to drug use and abuse. . If implemented nationwide, the recommendations would gradually and safely reduce the Nation's prison and jail populations to half their current size. This reduction would generate savings of an estimated $20 billion a year that could then be available for funding more promising crime-prevention strategies.
