Define the following types of abuse: • Physical Abuse • Sexual Abuse • Emotional / Psychological Abuse • Financial Abuse • Institutional Abuse • Self Neglect • Neglect By others Answer: Physical Abuse; is abuse involving contact intended to cause feeling of intimidation, injury or other physical suffering bodily harm. Sexual Abuse; also referred to as molestation, is the forcing of undesired sexual behaviour by one person upon another. Emotional /Psychological Abuse; is a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another behaviour that may result in psychological trauma including anxiety, chronic depression. Financial Abuse; is the misuse of a person’s money, property or asset’s through theft or fraud. Many adults are very venerable to financial abuse, mostly those who may have little understanding of money. Institutional Abuse; is the mistreatment of people brought about poor or inadequate care or support or systematic poor practice that affects the whole care setting. Self Neglect; is a behavioural condition in which an individual neglects to attend to their basic needs, such as personal hygiene, appropriate clothing, feeding or tending appropriately to any medical conditions they have and generally not taking care of them self. Neglect by Others; occurs when the needs of the individual is not met. Neglect can be passive or active. As a result of neglect people can become ill, hungry, cold, and dirty, injures or deprived of their right. Whether neglect is intentional or nor, the result is the deterioration of the individuals well being. 1.1. Identify the sign and /or symptoms associated with each type of abuse. Answer: Signs and symptoms of physical abuse are; Marks on the skin, Hitting, Slapping, Kicking. Force feeding, Burns and scalds, odd shaped bruising/burns.
