1.3 Explain how distress may affect the way an individual communicates. All individuals may react differently when feeling distressed. Some may become quiet, and not want to talk or make eye contact with you. Others may become angrier, and do all the talking in the conversation, and they may begin shouting. Individual’s self-esteem can be low, and their body language may be closed or negative, this can make communication difficult with an individual whom is distressed because you may not get any feed back from them, or you may not get a change to talk or be listened to to help them.
However, when speaking to a client, using jargon and medical terms can be considered as inappropriate and confusing for the people involved. When Patients come into a hospital, they are concerned with their health and they would want to know as much information as a nurse can give them. By using the correct language, and knowing how much information to divulge, a nurse can positively contribute to the care of their client. (Wright, Lorraine M.; Leahey, Maureen. 2009).
While a little amount of fear and lack of trust might be necessary, excess of these things is not good and prevents one from doing a lot of things including difficulty in communicating effectively. It is important that service users trust the service providers because the service user may not take the service providers advice with could be potentially dangerous or even life threatening. Some conditions, such as having a stroke, being depressed or having other mental health problems may affect an individual’s ability to communicate, because they affect the person’s
Some long term illnesses like Parkinson’s can impair communication. Environment: Communication can be affected by the environment they may find themselves in, in a dimly lit room a visually impaired person may find it hard to read information. Foreign language:
Some carers may not feel they can approach the person because the assume they are violent. If a person gets violent it is due to frustration and not being able to express themselves. It helps if you know how to approach the person so they dont get adjitated. You should always try to form positive relationships with clients even though they may not remember you a short time later. Some people just think a person dementia does not need to be spoken to bacause they may not be able to understand anyway.
Insufficient blood taken due to underestimation or inability to draw blood 6. Wrongly labeled sample or/and form 7. Blood not sent to laboratory promptly, left in room temperature to deteriorate The most vital step in avoiding these mistakes is thorough staff training. Standard protocols for the nurses, doctors or phlebotomists should be made available for them, encompassing proper steps and possible sources of preanalytical variability like sample storage and transportation of samples. A two identifier method is recommended during phlebotomy to prevent misidentification.
However people who are losing both their hearing and their vision will find it difficult to look for clues in the conversation. This will be particularly severe with a person who has central
Certain jobs may be difficult to pursue. Accommodations need to be required and limitations may need to be acknowledged. Such adaptations influence perception of a crisis in a way that’s different from an individual with normal hearing. Hearing loss may trigger an identity crisis, and reactive depression may occur. Older adults who are hard of hearing often report that their hearing loss causes communication problems, which can result in difficulty thinking or concentrating.
Some of the medical errors mentioned are a result of practitioner’s failure to understand all medications taken by the patient regardless whether it’s a prescription or over the counter medicine. This failure has caused patient to develop allergies and reactions to drugs. In addition, patient safety is important due to the fact that patients need to know the medications they are prescribed with greater detail from the physician interaction with the patient to make sure the patient understands some of the after effects of medications at the front end rather than the back end. The reduction and eventually the removal of human errors from healthcare providers will give healthcare stakeholders a sense of safety whenever they choose to receive the best care from any provider. It is also important to note the biggest form of infection and disease transfer from one patient to another is caused by failure to practice hand hygiene.
Hand washing is very important to help lower the spread of disease and bacteria. There are some ways that others can be reminded to help them remember to wash. Sometimes there is lack of education which can prevent someone from knowing the importance of washing. Men and women can be affected differently by certain messages and reminders that would encourage them to wash. Although the most effective prevention in spreading disease and bacteria is hand washing some still need to be reminded, importance of washing is not being taught as much as it should, and certain messages and reminders of washing may affect women and men differently.
