Leonard Bernstein Ms. Vowles ENG4UV-03 7 July 2014 Essay Analysis Upon reading the essay, I believe that the overall essay was very effective. The introduction of the essay was strong, and had an interesting “hook”. By asking the reader a rhetorical question, the author was able to lead into his main idea. The examples the author used were effective; Dan Brown and Stephen King have an international following for their mystery novels. However, I felt that it was irrelevant when the author said, “Although many female writers claim to be the ‘Queen of Crime Fiction”…” I believe this phrase could be eliminated.
The ideal of beauty has become a form of oppression by men and also self-oppression. This makes women feel inferior because they can never achieve the perfect image. Women are always disapproving every part of their bodies, scrutinizing every imperfection. Women are looked at by the different parts of their bodies while men are looked at as a whole. For example, the word “butterface”, which means overall the woman is attractive “but her face”.
From this, the reader can gain a sense of her ignorance. Her primary concern was her appearance and personal state which made her the most out of place of all her sisters. Other hints at her materialistic flaws were when her "precious toiletries" were replaced by more practical things. This disgusted her as she didn't know how she could live without these possessions. This behavior was normal in white America, however when she was placed in an obscure
Steinbeck portrays him as paranoid and insecure for which he overcompensates for with aggression. In section 4 we find talking to Crooks, Candy and Lennie, in this section we see a glimpse of her true self, after which she then overcompensates for her vulnerability by threatening to have Crooks lynched. This gives us the impression that she is evil. Finally in section 5 we see the true version of Curley's wife, we learn she has dreams, just like everyone else, and also falls victim to loneliness (another big theme of the novel). Miss Bingley Miss Bingley is a foolish and scheming character. She is shown in such a light that she is the complete opposite to that of Elizabeth Bennett; she is desperate for Darcy’s attention. "'Eliza Bennett,' said Miss Bingley, when the door was closed on her, 'is one of those young ladies who seek to recommend themselves to the other sex, by undervaluing their own...but, in my opinion, it is a paltry device, a very mean art.'" Miss Bingley immediately shows the reader her distaste to Elizabeth by trying to show Darcy what she believes is Elizabeth’s scheming character when in fact it is her that is the one trying to fool Darcy and the reader into thinking lowly of Elizabeth. Miss Bingley uses lots of pauses in her sentence possibly to show the reader that she may be pausing to see the effect her words may have on who she is speaking to.

Who decides what is beautiful and what is not. I feel that the media has a lot to do with how women, in the United States anyway. With all the magazines showing thin, almost anorexic women on magazine covers young women feel that that is what they should look like. So then these young women starve themselves and/or binge and purge themselves. Some even die because of trying to fix a certain mold of what is beautiful.
