Peru's principal religion is Roman Catholicism, as with many other Latin American nations. It is the official state religion and has been exerting influence on affairs of the state and daily administration for the past 400 years. Most church activities and clergy are centered in and around Lima, which is the state capital. Most of the official functions of the state are incorporated into the rites of the church. The investiture of the president begins with high mass in the cathedral, followed by Holy Week events and then the celebration of major Peruvian saints' days and festivals, like Santa Rosa de Lima.
The world is full of countries with diverse cultures, though there is one that specifically caught my attention. The Republic of Ecuador, which is what Ecuador is officially referred to, is one of the most attractive countries in South America. Ecuador, which surprisingly has a rich history, is home to exotic flora, wildlife and a beautiful and endless coastal line. It has also become one of the top tourist destinations on this side of the world. Ecuador is the fourth-smallest country in South America, some what the same size as Colorado.
The mission church of San Luis Obispo is unusual in its design in that its combination of belfry and vestibule is found nowhere else among the California missions. The main nave is short and narrow (as is the case with other mission churches), but at San Luis Obispo there is a secondary nave of almost equal size situated to the right of the altar, making this the only “L” _ shaped mission church among all of the California missions. The mission church today is a parish church of the diocese of Monterey. Father Serra sent an expedition down south to San Luis Obispo to start building the mission. On September 1, 1772 a cross was erected near San Luis Obispo creek and father junipero Serra celebrated the first mass, marking the site as the destination for yet another mission.
