For this assignment, my task was to write and illustrate a children’s novel in a genre and age range of my choice.   Therefore it was important for me to discover what made ‘good quality’ children’s literature that will engage, interest, and entertain children. In order to achieve this, I will study existing examples of children’s literature, and reflect upon the points created by expert opinion, and that of the national curriculum in relation to children’s reading.
The national curriculum for primary literacy identifies the second key stage two section to be ‘reading’ and states that ‘Key Stage 2 pupils read enthusiastically a range of materials and use their knowledge of words, sentences and texts to understand and respond to the meaning. They increase their ability to read challenging and lengthy texts independently. They reflect on the meaning of texts, analyzing and discussing them with others’ (Department for Education, 2011). It is clear that reading a skill that we encounter in many different areas of life, and within the school curriculum, in every single subject, therefore its importance does not lay solely within the field of literacy.
Reading is a skill which is not only used in learning, but also for leisure and enjoyment – with more and more children using computers and accessing video games, good quality novels and books are losing the appeal as being the ‘go-to’ form of entertainment. This is a reason why it is important that children engage with good literature at a young age and develop their reading skills by actually wanting to read – Medwell et al. state that ‘it is much easier to teach interested children than uninterested ones’ (2011:125). This may be because the first task in teaching is to ensure the children are listening and ready to learn before starting – if children are already eager to read and ready to engage with a text they will be at a significant advantage.
