Practical and Emotional Intelligence University of Phoenix Psy/201-Foundations of Psychology Tara Stabile August 27, 2013 The difference between practical intelligence and emotional intelligence is that practical intelligence pertains to a person’s amount of intelligence and ability to achieve personal success, success in their job, and career, and other nonacademic related areas. To break it down into simpler terms, practical intelligence can be thought of as “know-how” or common sense. (Boutelle,). Practical intelligence is acquired by a person experiencing problems and situations in the past, and having learned from those situations, and knowing when to apply that knowledge and experience on situations in the present and the future. This tends to remind me of conversations years ago about what is the difference between different types of intelligence and street sense. Different topics were discussed about how some people could be very intelligent academically, but would not last five minutes on this block, or in that area, or doing certain common sense tasks, because of their lack of common sense, or practical intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the intelligence that provides an understanding of what other people are feeling and experiencing and permits us to respond appropriately to others needs. (Psychology and Your Life. CH.09) Practical intelligence is important in the workplace because it enables you to utilize your common sense and experience from past situations to more successfully solve problems, and deal with random work related issues.
