One of the first factors to be considered when facing crisis is the reaction by management to the specific crisis. The late Dr. Bob Carrell of the University of Oklahoma advises PR professionals that they should already have some basic predictions of management reactions based on assessments occurring from day-to-day business (are they open style or closed style), from the moment an event sets off the crisis, and during the actual crisis In a disaster type of crisis, where a large amount of physical harm is a result, or harm to the reputation of the company is a threat, the corporation is much more likely to come through the event with the least amount of damage if they already are comfortable with a disclosure policy (Newsom, Turk, & Kruckeberg, 2010). Notifications should be made if needed. Internal and External publics should already be known so that the right people stay informed. Employees should be informed and utilized to maintain rumor control and prevent unauthorized statements, as they are most likely to be targeted by media. Ideally however, there should be one point of contact that can best represent the company positively. The Principle of One Voice and Full Disclosure should be utilized to keep information accurate and within hand. The One Voice principle entails briefing all employees so that if they must make a statement it is consistent with official organizational statements.
