The Government White Paper 21st Century Skills (Dfes 2003d) sets out the priority actions for encouraging informal and innovative workplace learning through coaching, mentoring and e-learning. The CIPD 2004 Training and Development survey on workplace training found a general shift from reliance on external training to a wider variety of learning interventions in organisations. It found greater attention being paid to workplace learning and on-the-job training as the most effective way in which people learn, with mentoring/coaching as the most popular method for improving individual performance, tackling under performance and improving productivity. With regard to mentoring, its origin is traced to Homer’s Odyssey. It is explained that before departing for Troy, Ulysseus entrusted his home and son Telemachus (the Prince) to Mentor (his wise friend) to act as his son’s counsellor and guardian with the help of the Goddess Minerva during Odysseus twenty years absence. Mentoring has from there on come to symbolise someone who has particular skills and experience to guide or help people to learn or overcome difficulties. This reflective provides information and demonstration of my competence on mentoring work with a social work student. Mentoring plan The social work student was on 6 months practice placement work at my place of employment and I was asked by my Team Manager to provide her with mentoring support.
