Consequently, they are likely to live in poverty as adults. If they become parents, their children will be born into poverty and the cycle of deprivation is continued. Some sociologists say that this is the reason why poverty continues to exist - by having children,
Thirdly the family acts as a comfort for the stresses and frustrations of working class men they are there to ‘Cushion the main provider’. Lastly the family as a unit of consumption buys the goods and services provided by capitalism. These functions benefit the minority in power, the bourgeoisie, and the economy. The functions disadvantage the working class society, the proletariat. One way the family serves capitalism is the socialisation of the young into the ruling class ideology.
Shorris bluntly tells the poor they have been cheated. He tells them that the rich have learned the humanities and have the knowledge to use them in day-to-day life but the poor, do not. Shorris simply summarizes, “rich people know a more effective method for living in this society,” (Shorris 4). Rich people know how to successfully and politically fit into the gears of civilization. Since Shorris realizes that the rich have this unfair advantage over the poor, he decides to create a course designed for those that could not learn these humanities in private schools and expensive universities like the rich could.
Children growing up in poverty face many disadvantages such as unhealthy levels of stress making it near impossible to successfully complete college, thus making it harder to escape their surroundings. The poverty rates in some European countries are much lower than in the United States because of programs they have put into place to help the poor and unlucky, leading one to think the government should once again re-declare the war on poverty. Krugman’s article not only shows percentages he also lets his readers know what the findings were from scientific studies. Living in the conditions of poverty is stressful for anyone, much less children. I see the effects that poverty has on many people every day, and always think one day that could be me.
For example, welfare benefits do it can help subsidy their family. By its very nature, the aspiration of this thesis toward Carol Stack and The Moynihan Report clashes with conflict with how black communities lived in poverty and how the only way to survive was through solidarity and exchange/ swapping within the African American communities (Stack) and how the black family structure was decrepit due to dysfunctional number of "matriarchal" family hierarchy or the diversity within and among black families. The lack of the economic mobility and social mobility of the people/workers are necessary for the upper and middle classes because it keeps the economy going. It helps a lot of policies like for example welfare. Welfare positions the current situations rather than the policies that would probably change the structure of our economics that forces our black urban poor people into the high poverty range.
The author of the article titled Arguments for Raising Minimum wage, Sue-Lynn Cathy, addresses poverty and how to fight it. Sue suggests that a minimum wage increase would help individuals that are considered a part of the “near poor” category move out of poverty entirely and to keep it that way permanently. I agree with Sue’s stance on this argument, I think that it would help people who are in poverty, and really would not only be beneficial to us as individuals, but as a nation as well. Supply-side politicians generally argue that a minimum wage is bad for the economy because of the fact that it artificially pushes up income levels, and that in time it is bad for business and will lead to inflation, and also inefficient capital markets. Joyce Hanson, author of Four Arguments for Raising the National Minimum Wage, gives four reasons as to why our national minimum wage should be raised such as the following: 1.
My family member agrees with almost one hundred percent with my friend. Where the opinions differ is that if the person receiving welfare is working and trying to better themselves then it is a different situation than if the beneficiary of the welfare is not working at all, and just keeps having children and continues to see an increase in benefits after each child. A customer from my job who is a recipient of welfare benefits believes that it is too difficult to be honest and try to better their lifestyle at the same time. This is a classic example of “the poor get poorer…”. While receiving welfare, one must meet, or not meet, a certain income criteria.
The 'working poor,' as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure deprivation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be
Many people think that since we are naturally given certain opportunities in this country we should all live well and prosper somewhat equally. In ignorance, I too have been socialized to think that the homeless and poor create their own problems and if they wanted to do better, they could. In the past, I thought that the lower class and very poor were lazy and that they do nothing but drain the money out of the hard working pockets of people who have done what they could to take advantage of the opportunities of this country. Through education and life experience, I realize poverty is an epidemic that affects many people in our society. I believe it is an unfortunate fact that most people stricken by poor conditions will remain in those conditions throughout their lives.
For this reason, they see the family as being vital to the wellbeing of society as it meets some essential needs, such as socialising children. Unlike Functionalist, Marxists see society as a conflict between two social classes. The first being the Bourgeoisie or the ruling class and the second being the working class or the Proletariats. Marxists see society as a way to allow the ruling class to continuously oppress and by using them to make maximum profits they expolit them. The Marxist view on the family is that the functions are performed for the benefit of these capitalists.
