It has been said that "correlation does not mean causation", however the strong relationship between a confident, motivated, and positive attitude has been proven time and time again to help improve running and racing ability. Running is, without a doubt, one of the most difficult sports on the mind. To be able to suffer through 3.1 miles as fast as possible through possible hills, wind, mud, and rain is extremely difficult. Your body does not want to be in pain, yet still the mind will not allow the body to quit. Therefore, confidence, optimism, visualization, the ability to overcome failure, and success all are necessary in order to achieve the highest level of self satisfaction and physical achievement. Without these components, an athlete is only capable of a certain level of ability. Yet with conjunction with the body and mind, an athlete could possibly achieve a level of success much more advanced than they previously had experienced. Personal confidence can sometimes be a difficult concept to grasp. Sometimes, it becomes necessary to almost trick or lie to the mind by saying confident thoughts, even if it is not truly believed by the person, since it is possible that eventually the mind will believe it is so. Many times, believing in oneself is a thought that must be threaded by another individual. "Clen Guillmette trained me in 5K's…and believed that I could break 18 minutes" (Manning), said Ms. Peg Manning, whose coach was a positive role model on her, which ultimately helped her achieve her racing goals through his mental training. Mental training is not uncommon among athletes.
