Modernity was introduced in the 18th century through the historical movement known as Enlightenment, which was an academic movement which applied rational thought to solving scientific, economic, political and social questions. It was not until the 18th century that academics began to believe that the natural and social world was controlled by forces that could be uncovered through scientific means. They believed that the more scientific laws can be uncovered, this would increase their chance of ridding the world of problems such as famine and disease. These advances led the Enlightenment movement to introduce, the theory of Modernity during the 19th and 20th century, which was a time of significant technological, social and political advances in Western societies. Therefore as society was modernising new topics emerged, such as Sociology. All of the Sociology founders were heavily influenced by the idea that society will modernise as time goes on because of the technological, scientific and industrial advances. Therefore as society modernises new movement did emerge, such as the Postmodernist movement which was introduced in the 1970s.Postmodernist theories on sociology emerged in the 1980’s and its theories challenged that of the traditional modernist theories, that sought to create a general theory that can be used to explain all the aspects of society. Postmodernism is a different perspective on contemporary society that rejects modernism and its attempts to explain the world through overarching theories. Postmodernism emphasises the existence of different theories and concepts of reality that explain societies, rather than one theory claiming a monopoly over the truth. Whereas modernism emphasised a trust in scientific methods, and a distrust and lack of faith in ideologies and religious beliefs that could not be tested using scientific methods;
