My confidence plays a big role in the person I am today. Freshman year was based on hard work and trying new things. This taught me to be in control. The work was not going to get done for me so to succeed I was the one who had to push myself and take over. Being a part of drill team has helped me with control by helping others in learning routines or chants with taking charge when others do not.
21 Aug. 2006. 2 June 2009 This source discusses the anger of beauty pageants. Beauty pageants promote the sexualization of young girls and provide to those involved in pedophilia. Parents are the ones who are at fault for exposing and subjecting their daughters to the sexual use of beauty pageantry. I’m going to use this info to prove that Beauty pageants aren’t just for fun and games, that there child could be in danger .
Beauty pageants are exploitive; they have kids that prance around in skimpy outfits. These girls in pageants really don’t want to do pageants but there parents force them to do pageants. People may say that beauty pageants aren’t always about looks. The contestants are scored on beauty, personality, evening wear, athletic wear and over all perception of the contestant. Beauty contestant ages range from 2 years old to 60 years old.
The media works hard and goes to any extent when they attempt to gain capital in our capitalistic country. Take TLC’s (Television Learning Channel) popular program Toddlers and Tiaras as an example; this program promotes the use of makeup for “toddlers” in order to win a beauty pageant. This show is highly controversial because of the mothers that permit their children to use makeup at such a young age. Sherri Shepherd commented on the mothers who are
Unlike other countries, American schools are financed locally. If the parents do not live in good communities, they have poorer chances of getting a good education for their kids. Parents that have already raised their kids are not willing to support the school for future generations. Tax cuts of 1970s and 1980s decreased the resources available to schools. Jonathan Kozol, child advocate and educational researcher reports that New York City only spends half as much per student as surrounding suburbs.
Although these people have a lot more challenges in their daily life, they always seem to make beauty the most important one. I think the reason for that is women are expected to act and to be seen a certain way in society. For example in the first few minutes of the movie Little Miss Sunshine a little girl named Olive was shown in front of the television watching a pageant show and imitating every single move the contestants made. In my opinion I think that she felt that she needed to act like the contestant in the Television instead of being her self and thinking she is not good enough to win the competition by being herself. Young Girls watch the beauty pageant shows and all they see is tall, skinny women walking on the stage with their swimsuit on.
Reality TV has had high rating since the beginning because of the entertainment it provides for all viewers. Numerous people compare their lives to the ones on reality TV, because many wish to be them or many just choose to judge their way of living since it is on aired nationwide. In “The ‘normal’ Narcissism of Reality TV” by Jean M. Twenge she explain how narcissism shown in reality TV affects the younger generation’s view of the world, by making narcissism seem normal. Narcissistic people on reality TV have affected the younger generation and the obsession they have of themselves. Twenge states, “To many older people, it’s funny.
Consuming Kids. After watching “Consuming Kids,” and hearing the various insights of many industry professionals, it is no doubt in my mind that mass media creates a social reality, and a backwards one. This commercialization of childhood is a lot more than selling just products and services, it’s a society issue which has direct impacts on human development and relationship. This commercialization of childhood involves marketers and advertisers doing everything they can to influence the 52 million kids under 12 that hold a buying power totaling $42 billion dollars a year. The mass media aims and is successful in getting a brand in front of a child’s face 24-7, whether it be through brand licensing, product placement, viral marketing internet, videogames or many other ways.
Individuals who decise to work in the education field spend a lot of time in schooling nad preparing to teach children. They invest not only time but a lot of money into the hopes of working with children and for most the hopes of making a impact on a child’s life. The amount of schooling is intense and the pay is minimal for the work and time put in. But the rewards for most individuals who decide to teach go much beyond the pay. For the majority, individuals who decide to work with children, first enjoy children.
First thing advertising do is to surround them with the image of ideal female beauty, and women from very young ages strive to achieve this look, and feel ashamed or guilty when they fail. The reason, as Jean explains, why most of the people believe they are not influenced by advertising is because its influence is quick, it is cumulative, and for the most part, it is subconscious. According to Rance Crain, former senior editor of Advertising Age, “only 8% of an ad’s message is received by the conscious mind. The rest is worked and reworked deep within the recesses of the brain.” The most impressive part of the speech to me is when Jean shows a photo retoucher taking different anatomy parts of different women to create a perfect woman, who of course, doesn’t exist; and the most impressive of these “creations” is that these unreal women are covers
