A Positive Attitude A positive attitude is one of the most important qualities anyone can possess. How day-to-day situations are handled affects a person’s health, personal relationships, and work. While it may seem that some people are born with bad attitudes, researchers say that negative attitudes can be turned into positive ones if the desire to change is strong enough. Attitude can affect an individual’s health. Anyone who has practiced a lifetime of negative thinking will experience much more harmful stress than someone who does not perceive every challenge in life as a crisis. Having to deal with harmful stress on a daily basis can lead to health problems ranging from chronic to fatigue to magnification of allergy symptoms and, in some cases, to heart disease. Although it has been said that misery loves company, few people choose to be in the company of someone who is constantly complaining and seems angry at the world. The ability to make and keep friends is closely linked with attitude. A person with a bright, positive outlook is uplifting to others and tends to form long-lasting and meaningful relationships. Employees who never seem satisfied on the job will not be as productive as those who enjoy their work and see themselves as part of the company team. Advancement in a career is often dependent on management’s recognition of an employee’s productivity and value to the company; therefore; it pays to be positive. A positive attitude can be developed by consciously making an effort to find some humor in troublesome situations. This may mean having to laugh at oneself, but most people need to take themselves less seriously. Another step from changing from negative to positive thinking is Improvement in self-esteem.
