Mireles SOC/105 June 4, 2013 Omega Arteaga-Gamboa Popular American Culture Paper Culture can be defined and viewed as social interactions with people, social groups or a particular nation. It consists of everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. This includes your ideas, your beliefs, your values, and your everyday experiences in life. It is the understanding of what is happening around you. In my opinion, the meaning of culture is communication. Culture is a learned behavior and it changes constantly, depending on your surroundings. Popular culture is what you listen to, what you read, what you wear and how you speak. Popular culture is influenced by mass communication, which includes television, radio, newspapers and magazines. The three major trends in popular American culture are television, music and magazines. These major trends are part of our everyday lives. Television is one of the major mass media in the United States. Approximately over 300 million people view television programs. Most households own at least one television and the majority of households own more than one. In my household, we own four television sets. I do not watch television very often. However, I do enjoy watching the news, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Life Time. The news is what keeps me informed with what going on, here in San Antonio, and all around the world. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are educational programs that exercise the brain, and cause you are having fun at the same time. The Life Time channel is based on true stories that I find very interesting. The United States has the world’s largest music industry that is heard all over the world. Music brings out emotions, relieves stress and is therapeutic to the soul, during good or bad times. Music is enjoyed by people of all ages. Music
