Policies and Procedures A policy, is a written statement about how someone will work in one area of their practice. A procedure, is the actions they will take to carry out the policy. Policies and procedures are a set of documents that describe an organisations policies and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of an external requirement. For example, an environmental compliance or other governmental regulations. In healthcare, policies and procedures are required for the care setting and also the quality of care a users receives. Policies provide people with a guideline which ensures care workers in a care setting, the policy gives staff an outline on who they should report to in different situations. In a care setting there will be many different policies to follow, all of them are there to help maintain standards of care and ways in which staff can promote service users interests. There are four main reason in which care settings need a policy; ▪ Operational needs ▪ Risk management ▪ Continuous improvement ▪ Compliance Different work places have different standards, to be sure of these standards at all times there must be something that the staff can check so that the same good standards are always met. Training can help achieve making sure standards are kept. For example, care workers can receive training while doing certain tasks, attending courses with specific topics or having meetings with the managers and being given tasks and goals. Policies are part of the law, every business must have one because, policies & procedures allow employees to understand their roles and responsibilities, also procedures provide the reader with a clear and easily understood plan of
