Police Officer Stresses: The Other Side of Duty Brittany Z. Stress is definitely not a fun thing to go through. It happens all the time and in different parts of people’s lives. Anything from someone’s children or relationships to someone’s job. Stress happens in any type of job. There are a lot of different things in a job that could make stress happen like a coworker you necessarily don’t get along with, a schedule you’re not pleased about, or even taking on more responsibility. Basically, it is the same when someone is a police officer. But, there are a lot of other things that could cause stress in police officers and it is something they deal with everyday. Being a police officer is a dangerous job to begin with, so that is stressful itself. Stress isn’t healthy either, and according to the University of Buffalo, “The pressures of law enforcement put officers at risk for high blood pressure, insomnia, increased levels of destructive stress hormones, heart problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide.” There are many things that could cause stress on the job, and this paper will discuss getting injured or hurt in the line of duty, a partner getting killed on the job, and an Internal Affairs investigation. Like stated earlier, being a police officer is a very dangerous job in general. The risk of being injured or killed is a stressful thought. Imagine getting ready for work and knowing that you could get injured or killed just by doing your job. Or, when saying goodbye to your family having the thought that you might never see them again if something goes wrong at work. This would be stressful for anyone. However, this is what police officers do every day they go to work. They have to forget about these thoughts, because if they don’t it will be in their heads all day and they wont be able to focus on the job as hand. But,
