Plato’s Allegory Of The Cave Franchesca Chavez English 12 Ms. B. Stone September 28th, 2013 Allegory of the cave is a short story with very interesting thoughts and perspectives. What if you thought you knew the truth but it was a lie. How could you believe your whole life is a lie when it’s all you have ever known. Life before the truth is great because it’s all you’ve ever been exposed too. Being exposed to a new idea, most people would not accept the fact that everything they have known is a lie, they’d be in denial. This won’t be the nicest awakening to reality but being exposed to the truth is gaining knowledge. What you don’t know doesn’t kill you. If someone doesn’t know something how can it hurt him or her? After dealing with the same circumstances it becomes comfortable to a being, they adapt. “Here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads”(Platos, Page 1). These beings have only known one thing, they can’t dislike it if its all they know. It can be hard to believe something that you’re so new to. Why believe that knowledge when you’re already in your comfort zone. Being introduced to something new can be scary, “And if he is compelled to look straight at the light, will he not have a pain in his eyes which will make him turn away to take and take in the objects of vision which he can see, and which he will conceive to be in reality clearer than the things which are now being shown to him?” (Platos, Page 2). This is a scary feeling what do you believe? Well of course most people would believe what their comfortable with. Although it would be discomforting to be exposed to the truth, the beings are gaining knowledge. They now know more, knowledge can be given but it’s up to you to retain
