Some say a dictatorship is better because the people don’t know what is and isn’t good for them. Others might claim that a democracy isn’t necessarily the better option because there could be a lot hidden between the lines that people vote for without a second through. Both can be abused, and both can be
1. Society functions best if each person understands his/her strengths and weaknesses and performs his/her proper role. Talent, not wealth, determines a citizen’s proper role, i.e., strong and courageous men become soldiers, those skilled with their hands become laborers, etc. 2. Education essential for good government—teach people to be good citizens.
Plato decided that both, men and women, should have the same education and the pursuit of happiness. This concludes that in ancient times, Plato was trying to make the greatest society and resulted in having equal rights of the same gender. In addition, Aristotle was a philosopher that generated these theories on reason (Document 2). Government in Western Civilization is based on reason because many rulers use intelligence and wisdom. In big decision, this is curtail because one must look past all the little details and decide from what is right and what the population needs.
(Doc E) Explanation: It seems right that all should have a share in office filled by lot and any citizen who wishes to speak should be allowed to speak. Evidence: The steersman, boatswains, ship masters, lookout- men, and the shipwrights have brought the state much power through their logical thinking. (Doc E) Explanation: They all are smart and possibly even better than the best born elite, and can have a lot of great suggestions in say of things if given equal chances. So everyone in Athens was given equal rights even if not the brightest and they can make major impact on their community. Paragraph 4 –Body Topic sentence: Athens had a better system because citizen’s had more of a voice in government.
We summarized Aristole's view of the justice as that 'Give the right people the appropriate treatment.' The appropriate treatment depends on people's status, property, or contribution and different conditions receive different treatments. Justice is the important principle of the city-state. Every society has its own purpose and the city-state's aim is to achieve the justice. Aristole supported that justice is the high road to democracy.
I will begin by recounting the demographic structures that are present in Plato’s “Just” state, and by exploring his epistemological and metaphysical claims, highlight the impossibility of such a ruler. Plato sets the stage for his Philosopher King by first laying down the foundations of his “Just” city. He does this by defining a series of classes that comprise the state; the producing class, the auxiliary class, and the ruling class. The Producing class is responsible for producing both necessary and non-necessary items, the Auxiliary class for defense, and the Ruling class for ruling the state. Along with this assigning of roles, Plato describes the make-up of the human soul and how that predisposes certain people to be placed in one of these three classes.
What is more amazing is that Laozi and Plato had almost the same idea about the ideal society. In Laozi's theory, the right way to rule a country is to strengthen people's bodies so that they could do more work and simplify their minds so that they would content with their positions. In his mind the ideal citizens of a society is the humblest, the most unwise and ignorant ones, while the most intelligent ones should see to that. He believed if ordinary people always stay ignorant, there would be no riot and the rulers need not do anything to keep their authority. The whole world would be a better place.
Likewise, society would cease to exist if it didn’t have vital institutes such as the family and education even crime and deviance to a certain extent. However, Sharrock et al, criticise Durkheim’s concept of functionalism as it overemphasises the value consensus. Other sociologists argue that not everyone will buy into society’s norms and values not because they are ‘deviant’ but because it favours the capitalist ideology. From the organic analogy, Parson’s 1951 developed Durkheim’s theory and postulated functional prerequisites. According to Parsons’ there are four main prerequisites such as: adaption (economic), goal attainment (political), integration (cohesion) latency; pattern maintenance.
Existence of a powerful leader is really important in fascism mainly because of its understanding of human reason. According to fascist ideology, truth cannot be known by unreliable human reason; we can only reach the truth through intuition and only special people, who are leaders, have intuition. Leaders know the best for the ordinary people by the help of his intuition. People believe that when they follow their leader without any hesitation, they will become powerful. Therefore, Mr. Wenger is elected as a leader since students believe his intuition, power and authority.
Also if we were to continue to sell these materials we would also be going against Plato’s wishes. Plato wanted for people not to worry about being wealthier then another, this would not be possible if we had to purchase these scarce materials from other countries. Another reason I believe that Plato’s ideal society would not work is because I believe people are naturally selfish and we always want what is best for us. In my Economics class I have learned that when a person is in a group and is forced to make a decision he/she would choose the option that would benefit those most. If Plato’s ideal society was to be created people would continue to want what is best for them.
