Plastic surgery helps boost self-esteem Introduction In today’s modern world, physical appearance has been a major priority for most of the people regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, culture, and religion. It is said that the way you look affects your overall personality. This emphasis on physical appearance has resulted in a boom in the plastic surgery industry. According to American Board of Medical specialties, plastic surgery includes cosmetic surgery that is performed to improve personal appearance and self esteem by reshaping normal structures of human body, and reconstructive surgery that is performed on the victims who have become disfigured from accidents(J, Hennink, & Reichart, 2010, pp. 42-43). People opt for plastic surgery to meet their desire for self-improvement. It is said that the way you think and feel about yourself affects your overall personality. According to Kinnunen(2010), “People at times describe cosmetic surgeries as an action that brings a new phase of life”(p. 258). Plastic surgery not only helps to improve the way you look but also the way you act. It helps people to be comfortable about their body and enhance their self-confidence. Media, nowadays, plays an important role as a mediator for influencing plastic surgery. Youthful looks with no flaws on the face, thin ideal bodies, masculine bodies of models and Hollywood figures exposed on televisions, billboards, magazines, commercials and advertisement encourage people’s beliefs towards looking beautiful and good. There are various television shows forecasted on television that promotes plastic surgery among different groups of people. People observe plastic surgery as a way of enhancing their appearance that helps them not only mentally but also socially and economically.
