Planning for Success: My Professional and Personal Goals Routines help a person with day-to-day schedules. It allows one to accomplish regular tasks without necessarily thinking about them. One can get stuck in a routine as it becomes the norm. Everything becomes mechanical and mundane. What happens when one gets stuck in a routine for years and years? What happens when life gets stagnant, and there seems to be nothing brighter in store? Goals are the answer. “Goals are tools for growth, and one’s goals should be continually growing and changing” (Ball, 2007, pg. 92). Setting short and long-term professional and personal goals, acquiring the necessary skills needed, meeting milestones, overcoming barriers, and using time management skills require dedication and commitment to achieve success. Professional Goals One professional short-term goal is to become charge nurse of the Emergency Department (ED). This promotion can occur by learning every aspect of the department, attaining required certifications, and gaining the confidence of the other staff nurses. This short-term goal leads the way to the long-term professional goal of becoming a clinical nurse manager of the Emergency Department. This advancement includes receiving much needed professional and educational growth. Personal Goals Selling the house is the personal short-term goal that has been set. Once this goal takes place, through extensive research and remodeling, it will simply allow the long-tem goal of moving to Florida to begin. This goal involves even more research to decide which area to live in as well as money and time management. Needed Skills The needed skills for successfully meeting professional and personal goals entail acquiring various certifications, research skills, communication skills, and of course, the ability to be a team player.
