Once completing my bachelors of science in nursing, I can continue my long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. The skills required of a nurse practitioner are skills that I have been practicing throughout my career as a nurse. I will listen to my patient’s needs and concerns, and provide them with information in a way they can understand it. I will have better critical thinking and reasoning skills for when problems or situations arise. I will have the knowledge and information needed to diagnose and treat.
When I become nursing board credentialed nurse, I will be an expert in the field of infusion nursing this would allow me to become an educator for a venous access team which would include the training of picc line placement. I also would like to attend national conferences as a speaker to share my knowledge with my peers. Personal Short-Term Goal Personal Long term Goal Needed Skills I feel the needed skills would be an education which will allow me to obtain the job that I desire and would good at, Milestones for Goal Achievement Time Management Conclusions and Recommendations Goals in life are important for a person to succeed. I believe writing them down helps to bring them to fruition. Writing thoughts and ideas down on paper helps a person to formulate a plan for success.
A personal work plan helps us to stay organized, meet deadlines and complete all the tasks involved in our job. If there is not any personal work plan, it could lead to a build up of stress. The best way how to create the personal work plan is to make a daily list of tasks that need to be done, update the plan daily, crossing off completed tasks and adding new tasks that need to be done. Urgent tasks can be highlighted. The personal plan: * Helps to focus our mind on important tasks * We are less likely to forget to do tasks * Saves time * Helps to decide on priorities * We feel more in control * There is a record of what we have done * There is always something to work on Also creating the personal work plan is important because it allows an employee the opportunity to show a manager how he/she plans to accomplish the things that are being asked of him/her.
After reading the case about Andra Rush and examining the listing in Figure 7.3 I can see that she possesses many of the leadership competencies that are described in the figure. Rush exhibits personal drive: the “urgency in meeting objectives and achieving results” (p. 253). This can be seen through her efforts to change how employees were treated, her starting her own trucking company, enrolling in an MBA program while still working as a nurse, and her persistence in delivering a crucial shipment even though local bridges were closed. She sets goals in mind and she strives to achieve them regardless of the obstacles that stand in her way. Rush also has financial and technical savvy: “strong technical and financial knowledge when resolving customer, operational, and/or financial problems” (p. 253).
Discussion will include a professional and a personal short-term and long term goal with the needed skills to achieve them, and milestones for goal achievement using effective time management. Values are the qualities and principles one considers important. A professional short term goal is to return to online education to finish a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN). The value here is the personal and professional growth possible in becoming an educated nurse. This connects to the professional long-term goal to achieve a Master’s of Science (MSN) after finishing the BSN.
“Nursing is not for everyone. It takes an intelligent, strong, and compassionate person to take on the illness of the world with the passion and purpose and work to maintain the health and well-being of the planet. No wonder we're exhausted at the end of the day!” (“Nurse Quotes”). Home Health care nurses are trained to provide nursing care for patients in the comfort of their own home. Being a home health nurse is a demanding job and it requires going through an intensive series of training, and having good monitoring and communication skills, as well as knowledge of medical terminology.
The preceptor has a job to ensure the new nurse is competent with skills to provided adequate, safe nursing care to patients. The preceptor has to wear many hats with the new nurse such as role model, educator, friend, confidant, and socializer. The preceptor must observe the new nurse and evaluate the skills of the nurse. Ideally the preceptor will explain a process or skill, demonstrate it, and then watch as the new nurse demonstrates as it is performed independently. Precepting involves a commitment on both the preceptor and the new nurse.
As I am maturing, it has occurred to me that I may not be able to perform as a staff nurse until I retire because of physical constraints. I want to have options, such as in education, and to have this option I need a higher level of education. I always enjoy working as a preceptor to a new hire or a
They can work in cardiology, emergency, family practice, geriatrics, neonatology, nephrology, oncology, pediatrics, primary care, school health and women’s health(“Nurse Practitioners (NP)”,U.S. National Library of Medicine). To be a nurse practitioner you will need to have excellent people skills. A nurse practitioner needs to have a genuine interest in a person’s well-being(“Nurse Practitioner”, Career Cruising). Emotional maturity is a must have.
Critical Thinking in Nursing Practice Critical thinking plays a major part in our everyday decision making whether it is at work as a nurse or in our personal lives. In nursing, critical thinking is a vital skill needed to bring about excellent outcome, stand effective quality care, enhance patient’s safety and satisfaction. It helps nurses know when and how to intervene to situations in a timely and fruitful way “to become a professional nurse requires you learn to think like a nurse” (Critical Thinking and Nursing, 2013). As nurses, we make decisions daily while delivering care to our patients. To do this effectively, nurses should be able to acquire and utilize a higher and advanced level of thinking.
