Pillars of Islam There are five pillars of Islam (arkan al-Islam; “pillars of religion”) that consists of five official acts considered compulsory for all the Muslims around the world. The Holy Quran presents them as a framework and basis for worship and a sign of obligation to the Islamic faith. For anyone to be a perfect Muslim in the eyes of Allah, have to obey and observe these five pillars. The five pillars of Islam are the shahadah (witnessing the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), regular observance of the five prescribed daily prayers (salat), paying zakah (almsgiving), fasting (sawm; siyyam) during the month of Ramadan, and performance of the hajj (pilgrimage during the prescribed month) at least once in a lifetime. Shahadah: This first and foremost pillar is ‘Shahadah’ which literally in Arabic means “observed, witnessed”, “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah”. This saying consists of two declarations, first is, “There is no god (deity) but Allah”, and second is, “Muhammad is the Prophet (Messenger) of Allah”. The first means that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone only. He has neither son nor father. This concept is also known as “Tawhid” which means declaring the oneness of Allah. This declaration of faith means entrance of the believer into the broader community (ummah) of Muslims. The significance of this declaration is the belief that the only purpose of life is to serve and obey God, and this is attained through the teachings and practices (Sunnah) of the Last Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Simply by saying this statement three times, “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah”, an individual converts to the religion of Islam and becomes Muslim (Pillars of Islam). In the presence of an Imam and other people as witnesses, the recitation of the shahadah needs to be made
