All it takes is the click of a button to produce a photograph. Any man, woman or child, regardless of their background can take a photograph. This can be starkly contrasted with other forms of art such as music, poetry, painting or ceramics that require years of training, practice and innate talent. However, as Ansel Adams put it: “you don’t take a photograph, you make it.” Just as the stroke of a paintbrush across canvas does not equal aesthetic art, neither does a photograph that lacks composition or framing. Those who agree with the quotation above would point out that all the ’ingredients’ for a good photograph are already in front of the potential photographer. All one must do is hold out the camera in front of a beautiful sunset to create art. However, there is more technique involved in the art of photography than the average person would comprehend. Examples include the rule of thirds; use of light and weather conditions; experimenting in time; shutter speed and aperture. Ultimately, talent in the art of photography stems from the passion, thought and feeling possessed by great photographers such as Man Ray, Diane Arbus, Eugene Atget and Bill Brandt, who all played fundamental roles in the evolution of photography.
Individuals who were simply in the right place, at the right time due to pure luck have taken some impressive photographs. For example, photographs taken by amateurs as the Twin Towers collapsed. However, most epic photographs stem from talented individuals who identify a single moment that exudes the exact emotion and essence of an event. The photographer then consciously makes several decisions on how to capture that moment and then clicks at precisely the right instant.
